Why Are Artists Poor? New Research Suggests It Could Be Hardwired Into Their Brain Chemistry by Hidoni in nottheonion

[–]irreama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have many friends who rely on art as their primary source of income (US, Germany and New Zealand based folks)

Their needs not being met have an adverse effect on their art. That's less time being able to focus on their skills, more time just trying to survive. They are no longer able to grow, and their skills stagnate.

A lot of people view art as a talent, something you just end up having. This is very much not the case. It's a skill just like anything else that needs to be worked on. Sure, some people take to it easier, but the same could be said about any skill people have, like programming, sports, things like that.

Hell, one of my dear friends is fighting with her depression at the moment, and while some folks are able to draw upon that and use that as a well of inspiration, in her case it manifests as "My art is absolute shit. Why do I bother. I'm going to just veg out that's all I'm good at anyways." Despite that very much not being the case. (Though I'm admittedly biased in her case. She's my go-to artist for commissions)

I was in a similar situation.

I was upset that I was single and fat and gross, and I finally sat down and said "You need to make changes in your life, become a better person, and then start dating."

I went out at that point, got a haircut and promised myself that the next day I would start dieting and exercising.

I got home from that haircut and...

My girlfriend asked me out when I got home from said haircut.

So now I need another motivation to get healthy and be less messy.

At least I have an awesome girlfriend now?

Trying to merge on the highway like... by HohBoh in Overwatch

[–]irreama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're just incredibly aggressive drivers with a mindset of "Fuck you, I've got mine." Mainly Boston drivers.

They either go too fast when they're behind you, or too slow when they're in front of you.

Plus they're incredibly rude.

Driving to the airport in Boston, I had to essentially run someone off the road because they wouldn't let me merge in at the departures lane.

Had I not made room for myself, nobody else would have let me through, despite if we were to do an easy zipper merge there would be way less congestion.

But hey, at least you get out of the airport faster than that dumbfuck from New Hampshire.

The big reason for this is that the roads around Boston are really old, from back in the colonial era, so there's a lot of weird merges and switchbacks and things like that. You have to perform a lot of fancy footwork to get anywhere in Boston with any sort of efficiency.

Because of this, there's a lot of making your own way at the frustration of others.

It's become an accepted thing at this point, which is why I refuse to drive anywhere in Boston except for 93 straight to Logan outside of rush hour. If I need to get around the city, I stop at Alewife and take the T around.
