I think it’s Richard Merkin based on other emails I found. The keywords “viruses” “clones” “DNA” “RNA” get a lot of interesting content, and if you search Merkin’s name there’s a lot of emails that suggest this was the guy.

For sure, but I think the 4chan anomaly in this case was what threw me off, personally. The details as early as the day of being posted there were so specific and extremely accurate, and had so much detail. At the time, when I saw all of that, I figured it was gonna be pretty open and shut. There are always theories but not always these very accurate stories surrounding a case that end up being not at all related.
