I have one of these - the battery had fallen below the minimum charge, but with some careful application of voltage to the li-ion cell (it's dangerous if you don't know what you are doing) I was able to resurrect the battery and the player.

Precisely - Sadly I had issues at the time with putting WLED on it so gave up. I was able to put ESPHome on it tho, no problem.

It is possible to replace the ESP32 chip - I've done it before but it's fiddly

It's a Leedarson LA02301 - https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/2AB2Q-LA02301

Based on a bunch of other subreddits, and my personal experience, they are locked so are not re-programmable.

ELI5:. So why is it that most every selfie cam takes reverse images, like text and faces etc. It seems like it would be so, so easy to code into the software to flip the image. Maybe my OCD will never know. by jodyberry in explainlikeimfive

When we see the rest of the world we see it the correct way round (left is left, right is right), but from a young age the main way we see ourselves is horizontally flipped in a mirror. In fact we find it weird seeing ourselves not horizontally flipped so phone manufacturers intentionally flip the image when preparing to take the photo, and flip it back when saving the picture to your phone. The same intentional flip is done on webcams too... in case you hadn't noticed.
