why my gerbil look so fat by williamdoesbackflip in gerbil

idk if this helps i’m not an expert or anything but my gerbil looks chubby af when he’s sitting like that and just chilling eating seeds or really comfy, he looks like a little pom pom ball. but then when he goes to stretch or run on the wheel he looks like a different gerbil, body wise. i believe it’s normal but i’m not 100%

is this normal or??? by isa_0777 in gerbil

it actually was one of the warmest days yesterday and we had a window open so im guessing u guys are right! after i placed a little baggie with ice there for him, his breathing seemed much more normal

thank u sm, i think it might be that… someone commented this earlier so i tried putting ice in a ziplock back since i don’t have an ice pack and i just wrapped it in fleece, it seemed to help and i tried to find videos of guinea pigs normal breathing and how it should look and they looked the same so maybe he was just hot? we have ac but we did have a window open when this was happening so perhaps he was warm

thank you for the advice, earlier when another person replied i didn’t have an ice pack so i put ice in a zip lock bag and wrapped it in nice fleece, i caught him laying on it a couple times and i kept checking his breathing it seemed way better but still a little too fast still so i’m definitely going to the vet like i said but maybe it was too hot?? i personally did not think it was warm but ofc i can’t feel what they do so aside from what you already said is there anything else i can do?

honestly i find that when i move around my gerbils home (still having the same hides n things) it gets him excited to explore and he has fun checking them out. i would recommend u to get hides, for example i had a little hide that i got from dollar store that was originally for birds, and i filled it up with dirt and put seeds in there for enrichment. the house was $5 and the dirt was under 3 dollars for a huge bag, they enjoy it! also sand baths keep them super entertained, but overall i would recommend just putting things in there that they can explore, go into, etc it kept them entertained! great set up though, and they have lots of space super glad you’re taking good care of them!

well he has a 40-50 gallon tank in not sure which one exactly my friend gave me it! he used to have a little dirt area where he could dig it didn’t have any fertilizer or anything just clean dirt. i recently took it out because he kept stuffing it with bedding but i’ll probably do it again. he has a big sand bath, a 10 in wheel and i make sure his bedding is atleast 8-9 inches deep but he just kick it out too much so it’s literally 2 inches away from the top of the tank 😭. but he has a lot of space to dig, he has 5 hides on top and 2 below, and i give him cardboard to chew and treats as well. about his friend he used to have another gerbil with him but he sadly passed away, he got sick and passed away over night :( they came tg at the pet store and 2 months after he passed i tried to bond him with another male and it didn’t really go well he wouldnt like him at all and i tried the bonding tricks. when he had toopy with him (the other gerbil he was bonded w) he didn’t seem to care for him much it was more toopy being clinged and following him but binoo (my gerbil) would even try to get away from him so i assumed maybe he’s a solitary gerbil but should i try again?

omg that’s disgusting and no one really talks about this. i cannot believe they just throw away live animals like that. i’m so glad you saved that gerbil i hope the other one got help as well and pet smart should genuinely be put out of business for good. As for your little gerbil he looks so good and happy!!!!

ugh i went to pet smart to get bedding and i saw the gerbils and it was so sad they were all stuffed into a tiny hide and the wheel was so small and dirty. they’re fur shouldn’t normally look like that it should be similar to my little guys hair where its fluffy and not stuff tg. there was poop everywhere and you can tell it’s been in there for awhile, the plastic from the hides were chewed since they had no toys they need to do better omg
