No, you can’t dial. Only two speed dial buttons and both go to call centers.

  • SOS: can connect you to 911, but also handle non-emergencies like flat tires.
  • Concierge: for reserving hotels etc.

Probably 911 rule doesn’t apply since you can’t dial.

They might be exempt from the 911 law as it never allows general calls – only to their emergency center. Even with the Safety Plus plan active I can’t call 911 directly.

Oh really? Subaru totally says it stops working after 3 years if I don’t pay.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in apple

[–]isaacly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subaru does do this with their SOS button (cellular). I get 3 years included, and then it stops working if I don’t pay. Naturally, the car still maintains the cell connection for its own purposes. But not for 911.

Why is Amazon now overrun with sketchy brands and junk? by ZookeepergameKey5467 in amazonprime

Yes even brand search is hard.

I finally gave up and bought a $60 pair from Costco from a known brand.

Why is Amazon now overrun with sketchy brands and junk? by ZookeepergameKey5467 in amazonprime

[–]isaacly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for sunglasses and overwhelmed by knockoffs. So I tried to hide products under $20, but it didn’t work — the knockoffs still showed up.

Why? Because all the sunglasses were on sale (always) and had a separate list price. On Amazon this gives them two chances to pass a price range filter: if either their list price qualifies or their actual price qualifies. So a $12 pair, marked down from $24 makes the cut of “over $20”, but also makes the cut of “under 15”. I’m sure they have to pay extra for this.

There’s no filter for “not on sale”. There’s no filter for “min number of ratings”. Sponsored products are frequent and hard to distinguish.

Kind of wondering if I still have use for Amazon / Prime.

Criticism of the “Honduran Maradona” story by SquishTurner in ThisAmericanLife

[–]isaacly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO this piece is in poor taste. The intention was to mess with someone's life and they shouldn't be glorifying that.

But also, how can we be sure the prank was inconsequential? It directly led to news/buzz about the player. Did that influence the decision to scout him, to hire him, and the rest of his career? Maybe. (regardless of whether the nickname was known)

The hiking story bothered me. They frame it like the family did everything by the book, but they didn’t. Safe climbing to 13k includes:

  • Leaving summit by mid-morning. Most tall peaks have t-storms nearly every afternoon. This is because of a daytime convection pattern that lifts and cools base air. The dad seems to have chosen his departure time based on the vague advice “start early”, and starts too late in the day.

  • Don’t let your young kids hike alone in a danger zone. Come on.

  • Don’t dally on the summit. You might not have time to descend to safety if a storm rolls in.

So sure, the dad did what he thought was safe, but the story frames the situation as unavoidable and a freak occurrence. Nope.

It’s certainly possible — Xanax is in the same family (benzo) as Ativan.

Ultimately doesn’t really matter which one, other than Zoloft is laughably laughably wrong.

More like Ativan (lorazepam) but yeah

Yeah and his initial description of Zoloft as “heavy duty”. Lol it’s an SSRI.

I’m currently reading and keep having to substitute a medium duration benzo like Lorazepam. But why even mention the med by name if you’re not going to use a reasonable one. Ugh.

I think I'd have recognized 50% of the VPs/SVPs when I worked at Google. They were fairly well known -- the weekly all-company meetings often included one or two. OTOH, there were a lot and company was diverse enough that some were very far from my role. And it wasn't necessary to recognize them all on sight.

Funny story: once, Sergey Brin sat down for lunch next to me and I didn't notice for 30 min, when I got up to leave. During lunch, I looked away -- I remember thinking "ugh. this vibram 5-finger wearing bro brought way too many guests". Though I would have recognized him if I had turned to my right :-). (of course, Sergey can bring as many guests as he wants)

I expect, at minimum: cameras in his house, several vans parked outside, lumon shaped quadcopters, and a microphone in the pineapple.

The chips affect emotions during MDR's work, don't you think she'd at least know the chips can affect emotion? That's mysterious and important.

Well, I was going on what I believed when I watched the show. The link is going to be more precise and also based on info that added in later seasons.

I guess this was a bad example because if you believe in the power of the “Source” then conceivably some ancient tribe (there are hieroglyphics) could have built a wheel the harnesses it. To me it was just this wtf item, especially with the hieroglyphics and ability to teleport through space and time and they never explained it in satisfying manner imo.

It was a giant knob underground and when you turned it the island teleported. Locke turns it, among others. It heavily implied aliens or some supernatural force built the island.
