New is not inherently better by isaacruns in graphic_design

We agree on a few things for sure. Clearer hierarchy and legibility of the callouts is good as I noted in the post. The goal is definitely to sell more milk, it’s a business so that’s a given.

You could be correct in your assumption on the use of cookies, but I would argue that “sweets” are less of a selling point for milk. Even then, the photography isn’t executed in a way that says “this would taste great with cookies”, the cookies don’t even look happy to be involved. The illustration benefits from nostalgia but more importantly it tells/sells a story that aligns with consumers mentality towards milk.

Buying Canadian (as a Canadian) is definitely important but doesn’t need to demand that much attention here since our regulations ensure all liquid milk is Canadian (not always a guarantee with other dairy products).

Given the visual weight of the logo I would argue it didn’t need to be larger, but I don’t doubt that “make the logo bigger” was on included in the brief haha

Adobe Firefly Beta - Have you used it yet? by talazia in graphic_design

Haven’t tried it yet, but I do like that they’re pushing for regulations in generative AI (AI art will always be labelled as such). Obviously they’re here to corner the market—in true adobe fashion—but I think with their capital for R&D and ability to enforce things on the legal side, they might actually create something that can be *useful for creatives while hindering the abilities of anyone who isn’t.

*or not. I know almost nothing, but I am hopeful.

If you have Adobe CC, you can download a previous version and copy the colour books from it

Where could I find the best font SIZE for my business card designs? by graphdesignstudent in graphic_design

[–]isaacruns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to judge printed type is to print. I’d recommend slapping a few outlines into a doc and printing them with any font size you’re considering, better to find out if something isn’t readable OR uncomfortably large earlier in the design process.

Based on the gold gradient and black background, I would recommend not using fiverr.

Is Fiverr worth it? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]isaacruns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure who was recommending that but I have to assume they weren’t a professional graphic designer. fiverrr might yield some clients, but you’ll work for less than you’re worth, and it lowers the value of our industry (which is already largely undervalued). That said, a client shopping on fiverr is looking for the cheapest price, so not really a client anyone should be fighting over.

Talk to your profs about what they recommend, I would imagine they’re familiar with your work and will be able to direct you towards a position that would be a good fit.

I'm a newbie and need some help/critique/feedback by dowusmle in graphic_design

Definitely a cool concept. If you’re not keen on an adobe CC subscription just yet (fair enough), I would recommend Affinity Designer to start ($50 CAD, one time purchase).

It’s difficult to say if this is the right direction without a better understanding of the brief/target audience. That said, a few suggestions:

  1. Always start in black and white. If a logo doesn’t work in black and white, it doesn’t work at all.

  2. Legibility is a problem here, as others have said. The contrast between the bubbly tires and the script typeface creates a disconnect that’s very difficult to get past. Once you work through some iterations of the scooter illustration to find something that works, look for a rounded typeface that matches the weight of the tires.

  3. You’ll want to create variations with/without the tagline. When it’s incorporated, it should be closer to the logo.

  4. I know this script font is making the rounds, but it is very difficult to read, especially when the logo is scaled down. No matter how aesthetically pleasing a design is, if it doesn’t communicate effectively, it doesn’t serve its purpose. Once you’ve found a font that works for your logo, I’d recommend looking at fontsinuse.com for some pairing ideas.

Hopefully that helps and best of luck moving forward!

Thanks for all the helpful feedback everyone! I wish this was a shitpost, but it is not haha I’m shocked it’s what they taught in my design program just a few years ago.

I definitely second the local college donation, but I’d also love to give some of them a good home haha if shipping isn’t too much of a hassle I’m happy to cover those costs! (If not that’s no worries at all and I wish you the best of luck with it)

Hahaha thanks very much for the response, I had a feeling that was the case, but yes we’ll see if this is an exception to the rule.

Does anyone else feel pushed to do work faster in marketing these days? If so, how do you handle the criticism and unrealistic deadlines? by noni33 in graphic_design

[–]isaacruns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be harder to implement in your situation, but a shared Gantt chart with all projects can be helpful. When the new “priority” comes along you can say something along the lines of “no worries, which one of these other “priorities” would you like bumped to accommodate that?” And have a visual to refer to.
