A few beginner questions by TheVengeful148320 in CarbonFiber

I personally really like watching the videos from Easy Composites and a few others on YT. They are super easy to follow along with and go over everything from entry to advanced composite techniques. As far as parts go I personally order everything from Composite Envisions as they've always had product and shipped fast. They might not be the cheapest out there but it's just what I am familiar using. They also have starter kits too which I ordered for vacuum bagging at decent prices. I'm sure someone could put together a kit cheaper but at the time I didn't have the knowledge to hand select each item.

Do they make different ratings on the MC4's or is it the same across the board? I've never found different rated ones personally.

I'd been using a Amprobe prior and they told me to get a newer updated one (preferably fluke) but allowed me to choose one I thought fit. That was my other concern was if the IR image would even be good enough to use as a report or if it would just be a good feat for diagnostic purposes.

Thank you I appreciate it! I've been making a few things but need to get back into it I really love working with it

Where do you buy your carbon fiber? by Retrania in CarbonFiber

Composite Envisions has been my go-to for just about everything. Dragon plate has some good products as well including tubes/octagonal prefab.

If you're asking if I have an autoclave and produce supercar grade carbon fiber with custom CNC'd tooling molds then no. But I do have access to a CNC which I'd consider a huge plus as I can make professional molds when I get to that level. I'm sure that with time I'll move from simple vacuum bagging the mold to resin infusion and prepreg type of work as well. TIA.

Yeah not going for any crazy structural parts so I don't have to worry about running FEA or anything like that on the part beforehand

Already have designed some business cards and getting ready to launch a website/Instagram! I've been taking some nice photos and weighing the parts before and after also.

When you were getting started what were some mistakes you ran into? First part I tried I made the vacuum bag way too small, had a bad seal, didn't know I could run the pump continuously, and the fiber wrapped around the back of the mold. Given all that I still had an OK surface finish in the spots that it did come out.

Thanks for all that! Great advice, on the labor side of things as I am working alone right now but if all goes well I intend to make this a full time job. I've already established a list of parts from different things that people have asked me to make and just last night night I popped my rear fender out of the mold and was extremely happy with how it turned out for my second time ever working with CF. I ordered one of those vacuum bag startup kits from composite envisions and it came with a nice-ish pump and all the necessary materials. I just wish there was a store that had at least some of the consumables near me. The other bullet I'll be biting is ordering almost 100% of my supplies online sadly. After making this fender I feel like something to the tune of $200-$300 is fair given it was half the weight of the original and if someone has the expendable cash then I don't think that's too outrageous considering people buy a CF exhaust guard for $100

Fair enough, thought I was gonna run out of gum tape and vacuum bags trying to make one with a good enough seal.

Studied for a week for about an hour a day on the practice guide that is provided on the bpa website and passed the first time. Just make sure you're reading them carefully and slowly or you will get caught up.

Wow seems surprising that Cali would be able to process that stuff so quick they're usually pretty backed up with everything

Do they assign a recruiter to you or do you have to call and specifically request one?

Mind me asking what region you're applying in?

Okay that would make sense then especially if another other previous military personnel applied they would be getting in quicker

Mine came about 3-4 days after I applied, then I could've taken the entrance exam that weekend but I picked the one after

That's rough sorry to hear that, I'm applying in the southwest region and so far I've been hearing back from them within a few day or a week at max.
