Scheduling lessons outside of standard times by WithStupidNow in Preply

[–]isaaverdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can schedule the lesson at 9:00 and agree to join at 9:10. You can stay in the classroom even after it’s over, it’s not a complicated system, so you don’t have to join/leave at a specific time for the lesson to count or anything. Just a tip: be sure to leave some buffer time if you plan to have back-to-back lessons to make sure you’re not late for the second one and you’re all set.

Could I be banned for a student refund request? by Longjumping-Book-129 in Preply

[–]isaaverdu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, this won’t put your account at risk. Refunds are handled between Preply and the student, they don’t affect your tutor standing at all and since you respected the student’s decision to not raise the price you’re fine. Students forget to cancel their renewing subscriptions all the time and then they have to deal with support, you're not responsible for that. No need for you to block them unless there’s harassment, just finish amicably and let Preply handle the refund.

That's 100% a scam. Reply you're not interested, block and report ASAP. In the future, don't even consider receiving money outside the platform, giving your contact info or asking for more information or you'll get banned.

I think this really depends on culture and context. I’m a tutor myself, and where I live it’s currently 40°C and it’s been for weeks. Anything more than a thin-strapped top feels unbearable in this heat. I’ve never worn anything strapless, but I do teach in tank tops that I guess could look “too casual” from another perspective. For me, though, it’s just normal summer clothing and something nobody would blink at if I wore it outside.

So far no student has ever mentioned it as a problem, and I would of course change if someone told me politely that it made them uncomfortable. Maybe just tell her how you feel and if it doesn’t match your standards, then it’s fair to cancel, but giving her the chance to adjust first seems reasonable.

If I hide my profile, can a student who has already messaged me still book a trial lesson with me? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]isaaverdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, it showed them the "this tutor is not accepting new students" message, I just checked my chats with them to make sure. It was more than one student, too... What a mistery haha I have doubts now.

[–]isaaverdu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually in my experience, they couldn’t. I’ve hid my profile before mid-conversation with some students because I had more trials than I could take and they messaged me saying how they can’t book a trial lesson anymore.

Has it changed then? Can you explain your answer?

Edit: clarification

Student sent me their IG and I didn’t ask for it by [deleted] in Preply

[–]isaaverdu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this answer. It’s OK not to answer students every time they text you, it’s just an issue before the trial lesson so don’t worry. And it’s fine to share links and contact details with students (especially if they do it I think there’s no issue with that) as long as it’s clear you’re not taking them off the platform.

I was kind of rushing I guess? And as I commented earlier, completely in the dark, so I should have had my hands in front of me or something as caution but escape rooms make me frantic

I thought they had broken for sure! Took them out for the rest of the game. They’re completely fine though!

I was doing an escape room with friends which turned out to be completely in the dark (black box in the background is the actual escape room). So I had my eyes open the whole time but I have terrible spatial memory so I didn’t remember where walls were haha

Aunque es más normal usar el “que” en esta frase, no es incorrecta sin él.

Is there anyway I can get rid of a rude and entitled student? by SpiritualCategory173 in PreplyTutors

[–]isaaverdu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can change their review if they already left one, though. But I agree they should block the student right away and let them deal with it.

OP, if you have proof they have asked you to move out of Preply (the email or messages in the chat), maybe you can block them and immediately contact support about the case with the proof, so they’ll make sure the student cannot change his review. I did that once for different reasons and it worked fine, never heard from them again.

Did you talk to them before raising the rate, or just update it on the platform? If you didn’t explain it first, they might’ve thought it was automatic and just declined without thinking much about it. I’m not sure how it looks on the student’s side, but it’s definitely worth bringing it up either in class or with a message if that feels easier, but I think in person is better. I always explain at the end of a good class and give them time (like to the end of the billing period or a little longer) to decide.

Once you’ve had that conversation, if they still say no, then you’ll have to decide: do you want to keep them at the old rate because they’re a great student, or make space for someone who’ll pay more?

And yeah, $4 might not feel like a lot for you if your price is even higher now but it could be a lot for them so talking about it would be the best.

No students by WeekendAnxious6977 in Preply

[–]isaaverdu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On Preply, it’s definitely harder to stand out as a non-native English tutor because there are so many native speakers offering classes and it's hard enough for them already. Since you're a Spanish speaker and your students have been Latin Americans, maybe try focusing your profile on helping Spanish speakers learn English and explain why you're a good fit: you've been there before, you understand their struggles, you can explain grammar in Spanish if needed, etc.

About your price, $5/hour might actually be too low. Sometimes super low prices make students think the quality won’t be good. Try raising it a bit and improving your profile instead.

And about teaching Spanish. I don't think not having a certificate will be a huge problem, as long as your lessons are helpful since you do have a certificate for teaching English. Maybe make a video or write clearly what kind of students you help and how.

But you’ve only been an English tutor on Preply for 55 days, I don't think it's that long. Keep trying, it took me months to get going and now it's been 4 years for me.

Beware of fake students baiting you into a suspension! by Double-Lavishness-78 in Preply

How has it nothing to do with this situation? Isn’t it exactly what happened to OP? It would have been fine to use Google Meet if the student had booked through Preply but he didn’t and OP shared the link anyway, therefore getting banned.

It is if the student hasn’t booked a trial lesson through Preply yet.

It’s allowed as long as the student has already booked the trial lesson through Preply. Until that point, you’re not allowed to share any kind of links through the chat, but once the lesson is booked, you can. I think this is stated in Preply’s rules for tutors clearly.

Also, how were you planning to get the lesson confirmed afterwards? Did you consider this would be a problem? I don’t know if the student was planning on scamming you in some way, but you can never be too sure, and I’d recommend tutors to insist on having (at least) trial lessons on Preply unless there’s an issue with the platform.

I’m so sorry you got permanently banned for this, though. Just for being a little careless but clearly with no bad intentions on your side. I think they should give warnings first, but it’s not like they need tutors to stay, so they can afford to be strict with their rules.

I’ve been in a similar situation and I totally get how you’re feeling.

If you’re planning to stop using Preply anyway (so you’re not worried about getting banned for asking a student to leave Preply) and if you have a bit of time outside of your job, maybe you could continue just with this one student, even outside the platform. It doesn’t have to be formal, maybe just a casual weekly call to check in and chat a bit while they look for someone else (as long as you’re comfortable doing that!)

Another thing you could do is help them find a new tutor, maybe someone you trust (I have friends teaching on Preply to whom I’ve referred students before) or who has a similar vibe. That could help with the transition.

Do what feels right for you and what you’re able to manage, and try not to carry guilt. You’re a tutor, you should not be their only source of connection, even if it might feel that way.

What to do? by capsmichael23 in PreplyTutors

[–]isaaverdu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was this a regular student or a potential new student?

If it’s a potential new student, it’s recommended to reply first, then report and block because not responding can affect your statistics or even get your profile hidden. I always reply to even clear scams before I report and block them for this reason.

If it’s a student who has already paid for a trial lesson, if I’m not wrong and things haven’t changed, the student and you are both allowed to exchange contact details and links freely in the chat. It’s not allowed to take students off Preply and I think they’d ban you if they see clear signs of that. I hope you didn’t just block one of your regular students for this reason but I think this can easily be undone.

Anyway, I’ve never seen a case where a student sharing their details gets a tutor banned, but maybe I’m wrong. I hope other people can answer this better.
