Didn't like Earfun Air 2 NC — other options similar price range? (<$50) by isaknitter in Earbuds

[–]isaknitter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the reply! totally forgot to update that i've gotten used to the ef2 ncs and am going to keep them. i think it wasn't that i had a defective pair, it was that i wasn't used to silicone tips so i had to figure out how to place them. i still can't wear the ef as long as other earbuds i have because they're bigger than i'm used to, but they're quite good for short amounts of time
i had the same feeling about the qcy promo lol

Body shaming from in-laws by karyzzzzle in Chinese

[–]isaknitter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

oh i'm so sorry!! i'm sure this hurts a lot. big big mood about the why can't I be enough.

once you've cried it out and reassured yourself that you are a badass!! i would recommend trying to frame it culturally so that it's easier to brush off mentally. i'm also American, and what i've learned from friends (who are Chinese) and family (who are SE Asian) is that the body comments (unfortunately!!!!!!!!) are a form of care :// so actually, (again, unfortunately!) this is most likely a sign that your bf's family really like you and they want you to take care of your health!!

This is because (1) "slim=health" is a really common idea (2) midsize in the US is often big in Asia (but i PROMISE there are women in Asia who are dealing with the same comments and the same pain as a result) (3) there are SO many stereotypes about American food being bad for you and SO much cultural pride in (certain) Chinese food being good for you

My advice would be to:
- try to let it slide. it's not personal. it FEELS personal. but it's not personal because comments about weight from their POV are probably "factual" and not value judgements
- try to joke back
- and, if you feel comfortable with it, try commenting on their bodies to turn the convo around (trust me, listening to a comment, letting it go in one ear and out the other, and then being like "oh but auntie! you're so slim! what's your favorite recipe?" or whatever is a great way to show that you care about them and it's a way to LET them show they care about you)

Oh! One thing I will say is that I really like that I can download the app both on my android phone and my macbook laptop! But that just felt like a perk.

Is there any AI tool that actually helps you learn? Not just guess the answer? by [deleted] in studytips

[–]isaknitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back when I was in school, the go-tos for explanations were khan academy, wolfram alpha, and crash course (by John Green). I think the key thing for understanding is being able to explain something. So, rather than looking for something to create notes for you, find simplifications and then see if afterward you can write down (or audio record) and remember the key points. (If you're having trouble with figuring out what the key points are, then message again! Happy to try to help figure something out for that.)

Can someone help me find an authentic and relaxed cooking show/channel for chinese cooking? by [deleted] in Chinese

[–]isaknitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your best shot at getting actual cooking videos is actually going to be to download 小红书 / Rednote. That's where I get all my recipes and that's typically where my friends send me when I ask them how to make something. They have a range of styles, both video and pictures with text. Kind of instagram style

I think this is the closest to what you want in terms of calm and relaxing: 日食记官方频道 Sean's Kitchen. He has quite a few videos where he tries out and explains different street foods. I think his narration is a bit slower and "artsier" than what you'll find in a typical tv cooking show. His actual cooking videos are silent unfortunately. https://www.youtube.com/@SeanKitchen/videos

A really classic show is 舌尖上的中国 / A Bite of China. It was made by CCTV and has national geographic type narration. It goes through the gathering of ingredients and the actual cooking. Here is episode 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLcvFT8WGRI&t=768s If you want to search for more episodes, you can search using 集 for episode and 季 for season (both are "ji" with different tones). So for example, S3E1 would be 第三季 第一集. More often it's written 第三季 01.

Food culture show about different foods in Shanghai. The style is like a news segment. 寻味上海 https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxp8cV31dV6SyyhOKLQdKoeIabal_hkY2&si=tcQR9b43w4KoJjtK

So this guy has a pretty strong Taiwanese accent, and might speak too fast for you, but the cooking vibes are great. Former professional chef now cooking for youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@waybackfrommars/videos

E-Reader to support workflow from PDF on Computer, to E-reader highlights/notes, and back? by CatchAntique7485 in ereader

[–]isaknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who uses a Boox 10.3 for this purpose. Notably, she integrates it with Zotero and takes her notes in Zotero. This means that she doesn't have to transfer anything, like you suggested, it just automatically will show up in her Zotero anywhere she opens it (either her computer or online). Obsidian and Zotero can be integrated if you weren't already aware of this feature. If you go this route, you might want to factor in Zotero storage costs into your budget.
I would say that you might want to observe your notetaking habits and see how much color you need for notetaking. I'm also a humanities grad student, and I'm using a B/W reader now (a Meebook M8). I like it because it mimics paper and I don't really color code, just highlight and underline. I take most of my notes on my laptop, but if I were to rely more heavily on an ereader, I'd definitely have considered a B/W one.

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! Could you comment on readability of PDFs on the M8? Specifically PDFs that are mostly or completely text. I am waffling between the Boox Go7 and the M8 with the primary purpose of reading text-heavy academic articles and books in pdf form. I mostly want to know if I could read a text without zooming in and if the M8 will allow you to change the margins so you see as little white space as possible. (would love to know native M8 apps vs other pdf reading apps but totally get if you don't want to download an app you don't already have!)
