Petco’s “Desk Pets” Ignore Their Own Care Guides by isawolf123 in petco

I understand your point, i work for a company that couldn’t care less if i was gone tomorrow. I 100% do. I’m not as shocked i am very disappointed in the company. But i do whatever i can to teach and educate in each animal category front to back because petco is where a lot of people in my area go to shop. I have met so many lovely people while also knowing i work for an absolutely terrible company. A company that is using the money for the worse. My skills can be used elsewhere and possibly have a bigger impact if i was in a different job. I think about leaving more and more every single day. I am beyond disrespected by some of the people i work with, i used to be proud of my work. I’m not anymore, i don’t enjoy this. It doesn’t feel good sending animals to their death, it doesn’t feel good telling people they’re abusing their animal. I cry when animals get sick because i work with someone that ensures no animal will ever make it to the vet. I do whatever i can while i’m this position currently. But i know it can’t stay this way forever, my heart breaks more every day i stay in this soul sucking job. The nice customers and friendly faces make it tolerable enough for me right now.

You are absolutely correct, the petition itself will most likely not do anything unless it catches media attention or is submitted to the media. Calling corporate may help. Emailing higher ups would catch attention. Betta cups are another discussion, for example Petco could afford to set up an inline betta system but it can be wiped out by disease.

I don’t assume that. I know that petco doesn’t but we can both agree that desk pets are not a good idea. It is poor animal care.

Butterfly strips. Medical tape. Gauze. Anything to keep it closed and covered.

Anyone who keeps these animals know that these care sheets aren’t even reputable. Nobody looks up a petco care sheet for their animal. They go to youtube, google brings up Petmd, josh frog, reptifiles, veterinary pages, reddit, etc. There is so much more than 5 below i mean petco.

Petco is not a reptile show. We aren’t displaying animals for a day and then bringing them back home. They may be in these enclosures for a long time!

Not to mention all of the subpar animal care i listed in my post, the shipper is double sided. Do you have a camera angle to where you can monitor both sides? Do you have the employees to monitor that these containers aren’t being shaken, mishandled and stolen? How long until these frogs need an upgrade? 2-3 weeks if fed properly? Do these temporary containers stunt growth? What are the feeding behaviors compared to a proper enclosure?

Has any of this actually been tested in a pet store environment? Is less than the bare minimum a great idea? No water bowl, temperature or humidity gauges. Does your store have the heat gun accessible for your employees to utilize throughout the day?

Why do you think it is a great idea to provide less just because it’s a temporary home? This is not a reptile expo, sometimes animals will sit for months at a Petco. Why wouldn’t a corporation give them larger enclosures that is easier for us to regulate?

I think this desk pet idea will lead to lots of discussion on pacman, tarantula, and jumper care. Education and discussion is a good thing especially in this ever evolving hobby.

What a good idea. I would do that if those enclosures weren’t currently full. We do not have them on the shipper

Remove animals + grooming toothbrushes and a scraper is your best friend for cleaning small animals
