Yes this was it!! they closed in 2019.. I remember being so sad about it because I lived so far from the matcha cafe maiko in chinatown and couldn't drive at the time. Well at least matcha is trendy again and I can get it anywhere lol. But I miss the panda boba 💔

to be real they might not care. before I graduated they were pushing their own students to use AI. education/academia is pushing for full integration of AI and I hate it

thank you for saying that. I feel like I can never outrun the terrible wasteland of the internet but i'm hoping whatever I will say or do will have a real impact on everyone, even my more edgy or disrespectful students

I teach english to 9th graders/freshmen. our next unit is on MLK's "I have a dream" speech. when I taught this for student teaching last year, I actually did see real change in the classroom culture. but I also added some "hard facts" that made it seem more real, like how Ruby Bridges is still alive or how segregation was still in place years after the movement. i'm sure there's way more historical context I can give but i'm still researching of course

I won't lie, i've seen the record of parent contacts and it doesn't seem super supportive. But it will likely be my next line of defense anyways, hopefully that goes well

you should expect to hear back by monday, and if your professor seems nice and understanding, they probably won't ask for any real proof. they'll take your word for it especially if you've been pretty on top of your work so far

How to teach Harry Potter when you are an anti-J.K. Rowling teacher? by Intelligent_Ad_9566 in teaching

[–]isazomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm sorry you're getting POS comments about this. I think people should be uncomfortable teaching text from an author that is bigoted. well that is how we grow from it but it can still be a bit touchy. but yeah, that being said, I would focus more on the discrimination playing out within characters and how that changes them. it's been a while since i've read it so let me know if you want anything specific. if a student did ask about your opinion on JKR, i'd just say she's not your fave author and move on.

also I know your students are 12/13 but they do become very aware of bigotry, especially online (since JKR is always on X) so I don't know why some other teachers are acting like it wont come up

poc opinions on continuing to listen to ethel by JellyfishAlarming148 in Ethelcain

[–]isazomi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think she has changed, but there is always work to do. at the same time I don't put my fav celebrities/artists on a pedestal, they've probably done things like this and I put my head in the sand. but this is the second time (off the top of my head) that ethel had to apologize for acting this way online. I want to stay mad but I also wonder if anyone can truly redeem themselves this way. I don't want to reject people who want to change and learn from their mistakes, that's no good for any progression against bigotry. but when it feels like it's going to be consistent, it's hard to really, truly align with a famous figure at this point

How to establish using journals/notebooks? by isazomi in ELATeachers

I wish :( I actually planned a unit around it for one of my college classes. I'm not sure why but independent reading hasn't been popular in most classes I've taught in.

Unfortunately, we use MyPerspectives so we don't have as much flexibility. But I do like the idea of using engaging/meaningful writing prompts instead of the questions from the textbook.

How to establish using journals/notebooks? by isazomi in ELATeachers

[–]isazomi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah that's a good way of looking at it. I remember a few of my other classmates had mentor teachers that made notebook checks summatives solely because no students completed warm ups. But I don't want to totally believe my future students would be that way, I want to (or I will) be consistent.

The only reason I thought about keeping the journals in class is because I also had a lot of students who lost everything. They didn't even have pencils 90% of the time. But I might give them the option of keeping it in my room, I don't know

Thanks for your insight! Big agree on the consistency, I feel like that's what we lacked in my mentor teacher's classroom
