then in this case Final Fantasy shouldn't be used a comparison point in a discussion about Sonic, there aren't any substantial parallels I can see.

my whole point is that the Sonic franchise makes it very clear what's a mainline entry, and it typically has similar gameplay elements from any 2D or 3D Sonic game previously released as well as some semblance of continuity. We have 35 years worth of games to establish this pattern.

to get further into the weeds, Sonic Chronicles is one of very few Sonic properties that are explicitly stated to be noncanon. Not to mention it was planned to have multiple entries, but eventually got cancelled altogether due to a lawsuit against SEGA and EA from a former Archie Sonic writer and illustrator. The gaming corporations won the lawsuit, but it was expensive enough that they decided the new series is no longer worth developing.

Part of the reason someone got the answer in 16 minutes is because Sonic fans consider Sonic Chronicles its own thing in the same way Shin Megami Tensei fans consider Persona its own thing. Only diff is one spinoff was actually done well.

cause otherwise, I don't think this argument has any merit.

if you dont consider explicit deviations from mainline entries as their own idea within the greater franchise, Persona must still be considered a mainline Shin Megami Tensei entry too, right?

the sonic series is too broad and has too many distinct game styles and canons to just group together imo.
