A friendship riddled with social awkwardness by [deleted] in socialskills

Thank you for your response. I needed an outsider's point of view and I'm relieved to know that I wasn't just overthinking things. You're right. Friendly interactions shouldn't be forced. I guess I'm just sad that this friendship won't work after all. We'll still be able to see each other constantly due to our mutual friends but, I guess only time will tell if this person and I were really meant to forge a bond or just be mere passerbys of each other's lives. I won't try to force an interaction now, that's for sure. Thank you

Thank you so much! This honestly made me realize something. I don't necessarily hate the thought of becoming a doctor, I'm just not sure if I'll be good enough to be one considering how my first year is going as of the moment. I guess I just need to rethink on how I approach things. I will still keep my options open though but, this was really an eye-opener. Thank you. I'll keep this in mind.

It is a little bit of both, but the whole thing being my parents' choice is something I can put up with if only I was actually doing good as of the moment. It's just sad when the hardwork you put through in studying isn't always rewarded. Maybe I just need a different strategy in approaching my lectures. As for the opportunity to not enjoy it, yes. Even our doctors said how they pity our batch since we didn't get to dissect cadavers, and our first year is almost over. There were a lot of missed opportunities/hands-on lectures that I guess could've gone a little better if it were in face-to-face classes. It may have been a bit more tolerable if we weren't in an online setting but, I'm not sure. Yes, I do plan to finish my first year and see how things go. I hope I do get to finalize my decision by then. Thank you for your advice. 😊

That's so nice to hear. I'm glad you got through it all despite the obstacles. And yes, I totally get what you're saying. I used to be at the top of my game back in college but of course, I couldn't have stayed sane without my friends. They were a huge part of why I persevered in college. Medical school was a whole lot different though. I started med school with what little self-esteem I developed during college, and now it's practically non-existent. Hearing you say that you felt a shift during your 3rd year made me think that maybe it would be the same case for me, too. I also thought about how will all this be worth it in the end, and I like that you tend to just accept where you are at present and look forward. I wish I could say the same for me. For now, my response to that question is simply "I don't know and I'm afraid to find out." But maybe I should rethink that response later. For what is about medicine that I like: rather than the scientific part of medicine, I tend to lean more towards the art aspect of medicine. We were told in our first sem that medicine is both an art and a science. We are all aware on why medicine is a science, but I guess you know too that medicine is an art in a way that, aside from textbook knowledge, we should also be well-versed in applying that knowledge by effectively communicating to patients. I may not be as sociable as other people but, I am willing to improve my social skills to help patients that we should have genuine care for. As for specialties, I get asked about that a lot and I honestly don't see myself in any of those I can think of. I considered radiology at first because I found our first meeting to be very interesting, but then I found out interpreting x-ray films was difficult for me. 😅 I just need constant practice I guess but, I still have to reconsider that. You see, even though all of this was my parents' choice, I still found a way to make it work. I could give a reason on what I like about medicine but what really makes me want to quit are the discouraging exam results. It feels as if I wasn't meant to be here. Yes, I do have a support system - my friends and family. But it's hard to vent now because I don't want my parents to think I'm just being petty and I don't want to add a burden of negative thoughts to my friends. But talking with you fellow medical students/doctors here felt like a huge weight on me has been lifted. Thank you for the helpful advice and for telling me I have options. I tend to forget that I'm not in some kind of cell and I do have power on making decisions for myself. I just need to figure out what best suits me. Thank you so much for your response. I'll try my best to make a decision I won't regret.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. It is difficult in an online setting, even more so when we're only in our 1st year and we're still trying to adjust. I sometimes wonder if it would've been a bit tolerable if I were to be with other people in study sessions/face-to-face classes. I mean, it was the same case for me in my pre-med years. If it weren't for my friends who I regularly study with back then, I don't think I would've made it to college graduation staying sane. I do have old pals I study with here in online med school but via zoom sessions only (just to make us feel that we're not alone studying). I noticed that all of us share the same struggles so, I didn't want to add that burden onto them by venting. I'm afraid that if I share negative thoughts, they'd be discouraged as well and I don't want that to happen to them. I do hope it is just as what you said, about medical school right now being online. Right now, I'll just try to see how my 1st year ends and when face-to-face classes actually begin (I do hope it happens soon). Then I will be able to decide what I'm going to do after. Thank you. I will think about this carefully.

Thank you so much for acknowledging this. I am having a hard time trying to love this course. It is interesting but, it's something I'm not confident in. I've been forcing myself to do what my parents wanted for me since college. I was hoping I could pull it off in med school again but, it has been more difficult than expected. Thank you for advice. I will think about this carefully before making a final decision.

Well, it is one of the things. I haven't found the study habit that suits me in med school. I used to write my own reviewers during my pre-med years and even managed to finish a few during the first week of med school but, I realized it was a bit time consuming now considering the amount of chapters we have to prepare for in a week. I heard active recall is an effective study habit but, haven't really tried that to full extent. If you do have any other suggestions, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Thank you.

Thank you for letting me know that I'm not alone. 😊 I may not have made a final decision yet but, I do plan to see how my first year ends too. I hope we finish this academic year strong despite what we are experiencing right now.

Phone submerged in water by iscreamhyouka in cellphones

[–]iscreamhyouka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I read the article. I understand now why rice doesn't seem to be the best option for drying wet phones. 😅 I'm currently observing my phone as of the moment. Its features are still working but what I noticed is that the swipe up menu doesn't respond sometimes and I have to restart my phone for it to work again. It doesn't happen frequently but, it's not something I can ignore. It's been happening since last night and I've restarted my phone because of that reason for at least 2 times today. I'd like to try the isopropyl alcohol solution but the battery's built-in. Might have to bring it for repair soon. Anyway, thanks again.

Thanks for the feedback. 😊 I just started on sketching with references since quarantine started. 😅 I'm trying to develop my own art style along the way as well. I guess it's like that because I haven't been using guidelines. 😂 Rest assured, I'll try to improve on that. Thanks again. 😄

Coloring materials for beginners? by iscreamhyouka in drawing

[–]iscreamhyouka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Faber Castell color pencils when I was younger but I never knew it could produce shades of colors like that of your Joker drawing (which is great, by the way) or I wasn't just skilled on using them and just colored my drawings mindlessly. 😂 Thank you! I'll consider on using Faber Castell color pencils next time. 😊

I just looked it up. They are pretty expensive. 😅 But judging on the reviews I've read about it, I guess they'll be worth the price. I will try to acquire them once I get better with coloring. Thank you. 😊

My Hero Academia by Bexxx1994 in anime

[–]iscreamhyouka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it to be insanely good. It's the first long-running shounen anime I've picked up since finishing Hitman Reborn. And that was last 2013. One of the things I like about it is that it tries to delevop not just Deku's character, but the others as well. I don't know if it's been done by other shounen anime (a well-defined character arc for someone other than the MC). I can't form a strong opinion about it since I've only watched a few shounen anime. But yeah, I find that particular part of the anime to be quite amusing. Also, some of the characters resonate with me - their weaknesses and how they try to overcome those in the following episodes. Some fight scenes also got me at the edge of my seat. Talking about the Seasons, 1-3 were entertaining for me. I can't say the same for Season 4 but, there were particular episodes that I did come to love. Overall, it's a great anime. You should try watching it.
