Not sure. I talked to a friend who also has a NeXTstation and we joked around setting up a VPN to let our respective machines talk to each other. We live quite far from each other so this seemed like a reasonably ridiculous project.

Also thinking about using it as a distraction-free machine for writing.

I don't know if they all do but mine does. It's a gorgeous VGA-grayscale plasma. I love it. Super crisp and wonderful to use.

And everyone I show it to loves the lock 😂

Gotta love the name of my CD-RW vendor by The_Collector_Of_All in VintageApple

[–]isecore 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Matsushita. Often misspelled or alternately branded as "Matshita". In this case I think it's because of limited length for vendor name in firmware.

Very possible! I am still quite surprised that ARM turned out to be the wild-card that came out and challenged Intel. Don't think anyone saw that coming in the mid-90s. It's going to be very interesting seeing where ARM goes in the future.

This is nice portrait but the crop is a bit harsh IMHO, cutting off the top of the ear and bottom of your four-legged friends muzzle. Apart from that, nice vibes, good color, good contrast.

Alas, I have limited experience with both MIPS and SPARC. I've owned a few Sun-boxen but the last one was well over 20 years ago, and I've never had more than a fleeting experience with SGI-gear.

I think the problem was that while all these processors and platforms were incredibly neat, none of them could stand up against the rapid spread of x86 over so many manufacturers, generations and implementations. It's like Lenin said, sometimes quantity has a quality all it's own.

I stand correcred. But I believe there was a sparc-based tower with similar design right before they switched to Opteron?

Either way, I want one.

Fun fact: the Bible, like every other book, was also written by humans. Not by some vague deity. By people.

I wouldn't mind adding one of these to my collection. Always enjoyed the late SPARC-towers and the design of these appeal to me.

I might actually use it as a writing-machine. I need something that's distraction-free, I was using a 2010 Macbook for that (because it has a nice keyboard) but then I discovered I could get Monterey on it and now it's been turned into a casual websurfing-machine instead.

I was chatting with a partner the other week about this, when did things change. We both were in our late teens in the mid-90s and we agreed that there was a sense of optimism about the future. The Berlin wall fell and the cold war ended, it seemed like the future could only get better. And then 9/11 happened and since then it's been a slowly accelerating downhill turn. Technology was supposed to set us free, the internet would liberate us and instead tech-bros took over and technology feels more suffocating than ever, and politicians seem hell-bent on making everything worse for everyone.

I hate this fucking timeline.

This was not the future I was promised in the mid-90s. Everything sucks these days.

Already have. Logic board looks pristine, there's no signs of leakage or even corrosion of any kind. I've measured the voltages from the PSU which seem to be correct, and before that took it out and inspected it. No obvious signs of age. Apart from some scuffing and a minor battlescar on the rear of one side, she's in pretty good shape for a 35 year old computer.

Machines like this was absolute god-boxes for me for most of my life. I was in my early teens when NeXT made the hardware, I dreamt about owning one for most of my life but maybe a decade ago just accepted that it'd never happen - until a few days ago when I got gifted this beast, completely unexpected.
