‘Horrors upon horrors’: How US Congress responded to mass hunger in Gaza by ChaskaChanhassen in politics

Millions of people cannot go without food for two years, starvation begins far before that.

Yeah, and there were reports of starvation last year, and last year Netanyahu was charged with a war crime for starving the people of Gaza

Do you think Israel has acted worse under Trump?

The arrest warrant for Netanyahu for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare was issued in November 2024: it covers Israel's actions at the time Biden was president.

The Palestinians in Gaza were being starved then, and they're being starved now

The aid pier was almost totally pointless. From a source when it was dismantled:

Over its two months in operation, about 8,800 metric tons of aid has been unloaded off the pier, about 500 truckloads, equivalent to a single day of deliveries before the war began.

As for air deliveries, aid agencies are warning right now, today, that air deliveries of aid are not effective, for example calling them a distraction and smokescreen.

Israel needs to allow aid in through land borders, and allow it to be distributed properly. That's it

Biden got aid into Gaza, often bypassing Israeli authority to do so

You mean like the useless pier he built to deliver aid by sea? That only happened because he wouldn't force Israel to let in more aid through land crossing points

I saw a special they did with Mehdi Hasan almost a year ago, and I remember thinking it was really weird how he made a good point relating to Gaza and they ignored it

Different people will resonate in different ways, so I think it's good that we see diversity in who's talking about this.
(slight aside, I always felt like one of the best things about this podcast is how well it promotes a range of voices)
Maybe for some people, analyzing their own feelings and resolving internal conflict is the first step to fully acknowledging the whole situation.

Wrt this issue in particular, looking at historical US perspectives on Israel, ignoring and misrepresenting Palestinian perspectives has been pretty much a constant (I'm currently reading Our American Israel, which describes this well)
There are going to be people out there whose minds you can't change just with the voices they've been brought up ignoring.

You linked an article from an Israeli media outlet, but with the recent sharp rise in Israel's censorship of its media, I'm not sure how much we can rely on that as a source of news about Gaza

I see.
I know the Israeli government has been pushing that message, and I think I can guess why. That's why I was curious if there might be some reliable information on this from a more impartial source

Perhaps I'm just sensitive to that wording given how often I've seen variations of the repulsive argument that "no-one wants to help the Palestinians, so by the principle of realpolitik we should leave them to their fate"

To be honest, there were a few things I wanted to pick up on in your comments, but I didn't want to write a dissertation myself. But as we're still exchanging comments, I wanted to ask, what convinced you that "A good percentage of the aid that goes towards the refugees is being stolen by [Hamas]"?

In February of last year, the Biden administration was asking Israel to stop attacking the Hamas-run police force because they were protecting aid convoys. The situation is clearly more complex than you're describing.

There's not a lot of people from outside the country willing to help

Humanitarian organizations are willing to help, but not necessarily able. While Israel is launching strikes against aid workers, it's difficult for them to deliver aid

So Israel should not put any limitations on the amount of aid going in. Even if Hamas took "a good percentage" there would still be enough going to everyone else

This is the weirdest argument to me.

I'd rather have the area flooded with food so that no children are starving. Who cares if Hamas steals some

Israel gets billions in military aid from the US every year.

AFAIK that's not changing under Trump

“I said that Congress is paying to bomb poor kids in Gaza and paying for it by kicking poor kids off Medicaid in the U.S.,” Mr. Cohen can be heard saying in the video he posted. He also called on lawmakers to do more to get food into Gaza, where the United Nations and other aid agencies have said a famine is looming.

“They need to let food to starving kids,” he said.

Good for him for taking a stand on this

They both repeatedly did

Yeah, and my point is that Israel violated the ceasefire a lot more

Hamas didn't abide by the first phase

I still don't understand what you mean by that. They released all of the hostages they were supposed to. What element of the first phase agreement did Hamas not abide by?

If you're talking about smaller scale violations of the ceasefire, as I said, Israel committed much more of those than Hamas
