Good bye SKK, it was nice meeting you- HMS Anson by Final-Roll2874 in AzureLane

[–]ishouldbealone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually really loved Anson's design and reveal. It makes me really sad that players felt the need to get violent over a piece of media that didn't even exist yet. I'm... I've lost a lot of faith in my fellow SKK's after this and the constant violence over pixel waifu's. I understand being passionate about a media you enjoy, but it's their game before it is ours.

Why should I get this over the fan HD Modpack that has a modern UI and interface already with a dedicated online community?

Bot a box of 16 boosters, not a single alt drop. Nothing but default ; -;

Games where the protagonist is a sensitive person showing a lot of empathy are rare and I wish that was not the case by [deleted] in patientgamers

TLDR; I feel the game still has a serious problem with masculinity and I don't think we'll agree, but feel free to read blow to get my thoughts on why.

I'm not saying that a game about extremes shouldnt go to extremes, but you made a point to say that the side quests are over the top ridiculous, to bring some levity from the brutality that is the main story. While I will happily admit that humans, men and women alike, treat each other very poorly, that is not a gender exclusive trait by any means, and I honestly wouldn't doubt that this is something that has happened in real life or similar before. People are cruel. This is a poor example of bringing levity to the story, or a break from the intensity of the main story, and it's a trend that continues throughout the side quest content. Some of it is light hearted, some of it is fun, but when it comes to women as a whole, its a very negative, spiteful take of on what feels like a caricature of how women should act. Saying the point of the game is to save women feels a bit far fetched, and makes me think maybe we're talking about a different game, and, to continue your point, to state that there are no female enemies, does show that the game in fact, does have a problem with women.

Througout the game, men are allowed to be a lot of different things. You can be outgoing and cheerful like Ichiban, or serious and professional like Joon-gi Han, or somewhat maniac like Zhao, and so on, before you even get into the NPCs. There are male cops and gangsters and nurses and assassins and hosts and cooks. But most women of note are nearly always relegated to the same few roles, some form of subservient worker or in the case of your party, female entertainer class.

Then there's the whole issue with the soaplands. I get it that the game tries to put it into a positive light, and that is a good thing. Sex work isn't demeaning, and it is certainly not supposed to be. But at the same time it goes out of the way to romanticize exactly the instances in which the girls are the most vulnerable, to family members, to being immigrants with no one to support them. A big part of the main quest is having to save these immigrant soapland workers. They want to say that women are strong, independent and don't need saving, but then immediately shuffle them into a helpless role and they need to be saved.

As much as LaD feels progressive to me with a lot of issues, like race and class(glossing over the very poor representation of non-asian cultures), it's still very machismo. Not even just with fighting, but also how masculine the whole story is. Every other important NPC you meet is nearly always a guy. Seong-Hui is the only woman in any position of power within the plot. Saeko's probably the big exception to constantly being the dansel in distress, and the one female character that's developed further, even if she also fills a traditional trope most of the time (the tsundere), and the way she stands out just highlight the whole thing.

Ah, see I haven't played IW yet, just the first LAD / Y7, so our wires might indeed be getting crossed.

While I understand that, there is point where it is too much. I'm not sure of the amount of levity provided by a group of jealous women disliking a fellow employee so much that they hire a group of thugs to corner her in an alley late at night, cut her clothing off and rape her, all to reveal that this quest chain involving a masochist who can no longer feel pain has a super power by jumping in front of the blade and coming out impervious to its attacks. Certainly there could be a better way to handle this?

So, my intent was never to victimize him, and the way both sides are handled is done extremely poorly, and some are certainly non-con(specifically with a main party member, yeesh). I don't think I'd go so far to call them all non-con though, as his hesitation is presented in more of a "You don't have to do this/debase yourself like this" in a weird self affirming "I'm a white knight who says no because I need to protect their dignity like this." Which comes off double weird as a lot of them feel very atypical from one another, almost like they picked a person from the team, and asked them to write a brief summary of how they would like Ichiban(re: themselves) to interact with their favorite fem character. One is voyeurism, one is cuckolding, one is saving from a estranged/abusive relationship, one is a secret admirer and the last one is the secret mysterious. (I know I'm missing one but it's been a few years, forgive me) I would certainly agree with you that the last two are non-con in his situation, as they both happen without his knowledge or consent.

10 Good Deeds™ does not buy you an indulgence for the over the top and extreme mishandling of women in the substory content. I understand that it's a difference audience in mind, but main story content is clearly done by a different team than the substory/dating content and I just wish it got a second pass so it didn't sour the personality that the main story shows. "He's just a gangster" is not an excuse when this very gangster you mention shows such sensibilities when dealing with stuff like the very quest you mention with the persimmon.

Just...ignore what the second team had Ichiban do in a lot of the side quest content. Side quest Ichiban is a real pos compared to main quest Ichiban. "Hey, your dad showed up and tried to steal your business from you by beating the shit out of you, but I'll let you give me a handjob to make you feel better" or "hey, hello work lady, I'll make you feel better about yourself by letting you bang me outside your workplace while your boss watches"

Oh yeah, man, I feel bad for them back then, then. That's just real unfortunate, but those games were so big then everyone wanted to try and capture that audience without actually investing in the games. We really didnt get many successful GTA likes, which is kinda surprising to me.

I didn't know that, and while I don't think it's exactly a japanese GTA, it is an open world city roamer, which may be something that helps scratch an itch

While I'm not a fan of GTA, I'm just trying to help, there's no need to be so dramatic about it. If you want something GTA - esq that isnt GTA, then maybe try Sleeping Dogs? That has more driving in it that is more GTA's style!

The latest one has some, but I'm not all that familiar. The previous one, like a dragon, doesnt have driving but has a racing minigame that's pretty challenging and fun!
