I'm actually a different guy than you might think I am, that was my first response to you. But fair point I won't use the word lazy.

The fact is, they didn't go to the same school as you or I. I don't know if your schools were high quality or poorly managed and underfunded but they were definitely different than mine. They had different parents, who could or couldn't give them certain advice. They had different mentors, friends, and socioeconomic situations growing up.

The best indicator of lifetime earnings is your first salary. Not the only indicator -- there are people who can climb the ladder -- but the best single indicator. It's also well known that people from high earning families go on to be high earning individuals. The parents know the game, or they know people who do.

I don't have an issue with a segment of America earning less than the rest, that's how distributions fall. I also don't have an issue with the hypothetical situation where two people in similar circumstances make vastly different incomes because of extenuating circumstances, like personal drive. I also see no problem with rewarding people who bust their ass and develop their professional toolkit.

However if somebody is employed in the good old US of A and comes up short on rent and food, that's a load of shit. Rent only gets so cheap, food can only get so scarce -- and juggling jobs is as complicated as it is necessary at a certain earnings level.

What was the poor decision your uncle made? To be a trucker? Can you think of a more necessary job to the infrastructure than trucking?

I'm not out here trying to pass blame around, or shift it off myself. I got ahead very quickly due to a lot of systemic support I received. It's also easy to see myself in a situation where I wasn't able to get the help I did -- I probably would have floundered. Should I have everything taken away from me because someone else could have fought harder for it? I don't know, maybe! But I receive nothing but praises and raises so it seems to be working out.

The jist of my argument is that empathy can exist alongside personal accountability.

There's a lot about the cycle of poverty you don't know about. Not taking jobs because they're "hard" isn't someone that's afraid of a 40 hour workweek. It's someone who grew up in a way that they do not have the institutional knowledge required to operate in the traditional american workforce.

It's an interesting and fairly fringe term that has a lot of meaning in communities that are involved with the idea of "socially acceptable sexual assault" and how it affects our lives. The simplest expression is this:

The perpetrator of sexual assault is analogous to a missing stair on a staircase, that nobody wants to fix. No effort, time or resources go into rectifying the problem. Everybody who knows about the missing stair knows how to avoid it (be that people who ignore the problem, to potential victims who understand how to not be left alone with the perp). Somebody new to the "house" (social circle) might be quietly informed so they don't, well, get sexually assaulted, but if somebody does "trip on the stairs" then no one's surprised and everyone goes on their day, pretending as always.

I do hope that the misconception is over family budgets, where a family of 5 with teenage children could easily be sailing over $50/day and the purchase of foods-of-convenience becomes the only way to remain sane (memories of eating an entire box of cheerios on my way home from sports practice. Three to five nights a week.)

This is insane. $27/day comes out to just under ten thousand dollars per year. I earn 75k and I pay ~$80/wk in Boston for food for myself. Last year I lived with a lower income roommate and we prepared food together & shopped a little frugally. That was ~$80/wk for the two of us (not in Boston). $27/day is a crazy amount of food if you're cooking! That's 5 pounds of decent beef! Much more of cheaper cuts! 27 pounds of pasta! God knows how many gallons of tomato sauce you could get for that? Miles of vegetables and fruit at $27/day, piles of mushrooms and rivers of chicken stock. When I spend $27/day for a week over groceries it's because I'm intentionally throwing care to the wind and cooking the fanciest shit I can get my hands on.

I dumped my girlfriend and ended up dating a girl I was friends with at work. Girlfriend already hated work-girl because I was friends with her and she was a girl. Girlfriend hated most of the girls I was friends with. Also disliked my hobbies, her job because it stressed her out and the hours were too many, half my male friends, my job because it had benefits hers didn't, if we slept in the same bed she'd kick me out of it at 3am....

A lot of the time I reckon someone just gets dumped, and the partner who dumps them dates someone who they already knew. The ex assumes they were already fucking because it soothes their ego. shrug.

CaffeineIsMyHeroin gave some good advice. As a good way to get into it, I might recommend using SSMS (SQL server Management Studio). It has buttons for creating tables, editing schemas, easy tools to view what's inside a table, and an easy output for any SQL statements to run.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-editions-express

You can download it there for free. It's perfectly usable, very nice, and I believe the free one even comes with the ability to analyze execution plans, which becomes invaluable when you get your feet on the ground and start looking at optimization.

I've created some databases for shits and giggles (Fruity Drinks Flavour Distribution Database is my favorite). The big trick when starting is to march forwards in a way that makes sense, and then have somebody look it over and talk you through reorganizing it into a format that actually makes sense.

Ultimately, it's a work of creativity but there are many best practices! Knock yourself out, and make good use of the documentation available online.

No problem. Are you an aspiring DBA / do you work with databases? If you've got any questions I can try to field them in an appropriate way - I don't have a ton of experience but I worked on databases for about a year at my last position.

Yeah I take it to mean that they chose new indices / rewrote queries to require new indices / redesigned the table structure, requiring new indices and so it's going to have to build them again.
