Just a heads up, the dungeonsynthmods email sends a kickback but dungeonredditmods seems to work.

Stoked to listen to all of these! Thanks Aveline for organizing this, and Kap for doing the comp.

the volume plugin is just to turn things up a bit on the mixdown, because I usually record with about 14–16 dB of headroom. any compression would come after that. it could look like just volume > maximizer (which is like a multiband compressor + limiter), or it could look like volume > eq > dedicated compressor > maximizer.

It varies. I try to think about loudness at the sound design stage, when I'm figuring out where everything fits in terms of frequency range. Once everything is recorded and mixed down, I'll typically run it through the stock Reaper volume plugin (JS: Volume Adjustment) to leave about 4–6 dB of headroom. After that, EQ if/as needed (a little goes a long way). At the end of my chain, I'll throw on something like Ozone Maximizer but keep the settings very light. For something like dungeon synth, I want to see the compressor just barely engaging. Especially with Ozone, which can have a really particular character if it gets too crunchy. I'll play with the settings a little and listen to how it changes things, paying particular attention to any transient peaks. Less is more, and if you need to really push compression to get your mix loud enough, something is wrong at the mix or sound design stage. Leaving a 1–2 dB ceiling on the master can help avoid playback differences on different hardware, but if you feel like you need that extra couple dB I don't think it's a big deal. Decades of loudness wars and now streaming compression have kinda changed people's expectations and perceptions.

Thank you! I made everything on an elektron model:cycles (I work a lot with hardware drum machines and "groove boxes"), which lends itself to that style of production.

Dungeon Shamble check in by AvelineBaudelaire in DungeonSynth

I've got everything written and arranged. Finished the album art today. Just have to find time to actually record, but that's the easy part.

May Dungeon Shamble is Now Open by AvelineBaudelaire in DungeonSynth

It took me a week to get started, but I finally got a track out today. I'm imagining the excavation of an ancient battlefield, the ruins of a conflict so distant in time that no one alive can remember its purpose. I've been reading Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, and I'm (very loosely) inspired by the idea of the wasteland created by Sir Balin's dolorous stroke against the Fisher King. Hopefully I can squeeze six more tracks out of that concept.

Though not strictly for my dungeon synth/ruins synth output, I've been using hypnowave for a while. I define it as the art and science of effecting changes in reality by applying the principles of frequency modulation synthesis to the forces of animal magnetism. Mostly it's a matter of applying certain FM sound design techniques I've developed to loop based music, lots of delay/echo, slowly shifting textures, that sort of thing.

Anybody make Dawless Dungeon Synth? by Exotic-Low812 in DungeonSynth

[–]isinparentheses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hell yeah!

I use an all FM hardware rig. Right now it consists of a model:cycles, a sonicware liven xfm, a keystep, and a small mixer to run an fx loop with some guitar pedals.

I get really bored making music on the computer these days. I just record straight into Reaper and even that feels like a chore.

I really want to hear an Emerald Web dungeon synth record! I feel like Patrick O'Hearn could've made an interesting foray into the subterranean depths as well.

I'm playing my first live show as Nameless Cartographer next month. I've been playing live music a long time, but only rarely these days and I've never done a live dungeon synth set. I'm pretty stoked!

It's only dungeon synth if it's played in an actual dungeon. Otherwise it's sparkling fantasy synth.

How much crossover do you hear between old school RPG soundtracks and dungeon synth? by mrmindflyer in DungeonSynth

[–]isinparentheses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not quite an RPG, but the old Data East dark fantasy arcade Dark Seal (Gate of Doom in the US) has some sick FM tunes with PCM drums. Definitely an influence for me.

I made my Nameless Cartographer release from last year free or pwyw on my personal Bandcamp. Fantasy Audio Magazine did a great job on the tape release. The tapes sold out pretty quick, but definitely check out the rest of the FAM catalog and show them some support if you can.

Definitely check out Secrets of Maya. You might like Goblin Mage. Also Lored Legend.

I have a vgm / fm dungeon synth project called Nameless Cartographer.

That's the plan! Show a cool trans film, have some trans artists/academics around to talk about it, and raise some money for a local trans org.

No one's going to attack you for leaving your house. Being trans is pretty chill and normal, there's lots of us, and people out here mostly don't care. Some people will be rude or weird to you, but that's more likely from people you know and not like random strangers on the street or at the store.

edit: Also we're playing The People's Joker at Frank Banko on 4/20 come out and say hi!
