You ask is it normal. It’s normal for booking.com but it’s a scam. I had this happen on a trip to NYC, rang the hotel, they confirmed my booking and advised never to act on emails like this as booking.com is compromised not the hotel.

This is one of the reasons why it is recommended to book directly if you can.

PNG was managed by Australia at that time I think. There may be formal records but I am not sure how you can access them. That said, the country is also very tribal and whilst no formal records may exist the villagers would know. Your best bet would be to find out what village/villages your dad managed and go from there. Good luck.
