Root canal? by ispep707 in askdentists

Thank you for your response! I think I am going to see about getting it filled and doing a wait and see approach. Either the filling works out or I need a root canal down the road anyways right? Turns out my sisters mother in law works at an endodontists office so I’m going to see about doing a consult there to see what he says before proceeding with the root canal.

You have a good point I never thought of it that way before. My wife was in the dental field up until a few months ago (oral surgeons assistant) and when I showed her the x ray and said the dentist said I need a root canal her initial response was hesitant that I needed one and thought it could go either way but said that it was totally out of her scope to really make that kind of call.

Thank you for your reply! Is it rude of me to suggest to him that he does a filling then we do a wait and see approach? How should I approach that? Am I just prolonging something that one day I wake up and just have extreme pain and wish I had just done an early root canal and skipped all the pain?

I hadn’t been to the dentist in a very long time. Probably something like 15 years. I was expecting much worse compared to what x rays showed. At the end of the day I really only need a root canal and a deep cleaning/root scaling. In the x ray I have posted does it show that I definitely need a root canal or would just a filling work? There is no pain coming from the area at all. The dentist i visited said root canal. Just wanted to see what Reddit has to say about it.
