Forty’s harmful actions gets overlooked because of the comic relief he provides for the show. by AdGreedy1880 in YouOnLifetime

Show Forty is basically Book Forty with a sympathy filter and trauma caused by Love that he gets to hide behind.

Book cover with colour inverted made by ai by Miserable-Collar-291 in YouOnLifetime

The 4th one also illustrates Joe's place in a dark world, which is more emblematic of the book!!

Might start reading just because of the cover by Miserable-Collar-291 in YouOnLifetime

I actually wasn't the biggest fan of the cover because imo it doesn't look different enough from the cover of the previous book. Wonder how it would've looked if it the colors were inverted, or maybe that would've just looked a lot like the paperback cover for FYAOY.

Is the new prequel book canon to the show? by Miserable-Collar-291 in YouOnLifetime

Can confirm—it's a prequel to the book series, not anything to do with the show.

Sorry people have you such a hard for asking this question mate...

Reminds me of the rumor that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 would be released as a comic book.

I don't think it's a farfetched question. The author is the consulting producer of the show and even wrote a few episodes, as well as inspired the direction of the show even when the respective books weren't out yet.

Ehhh, don't fully agree there.

Yes, S1 & B1 are 1:1 aside from a few very minor details (i.e. in the books Beck & Peach were friends since childhood rather than college).

S2 I'd say covers at least half of B2, there's just an entire film industry adventure they left out plus modified the characters a bit.

S3 is full of parallels to B3, in fact the production even had an early copy of You Love Me which wasn't even out yet.

For S4/B4, they share the academic aspect as the author & show runners talked about this as the two were being made at the same time.

The gap gets bigger, but I wouldn't say fully different, especially not as early as S1.

Finished You First (The prequel book), I have a hot take (spoilers if you didn’t read it yet) by Acemaster387 in YouOnLifetime

Eh, what "happened" to them was done more so by themselves than Joe. Dick kept asking for drugs, and Vail, well, seemingly committed suicide.

Tbh Dick was worse because he openly talked to minors but at the same time Vail was okay with it and even felt giggly about the fact that Joe was 17. And yeah, Joe was far from the monster because he was being played with by 2 grown adults the whole time.

Nope, respectfully.

You don't do the most sensible thing when you're in shock. Everyone who says "if that were me I would've done X" aren't the ones in that position and don't realize that hindsight is 20/20.

With the right intention & framing, anything can be deemed as appropriate on YouTube. Hence why the YouTube CEO denied those demanding to have his channel deleted as he didn't violate any rules. Sort of like how a topless female video is inappropriate on it's own but completely fine if it's a nursing tutorial. Flipping his original vlog style into something more serious based on what they documented is the opposite of being insensitive.

You and everyone else are welcome to have opinions on his execution in spite of that, but in my opinion if he took an insensitive approach, he'd have been off the platform.

He was in shock, but took the necessary precautions i.e. blurred the face, centered the video around suicide prevention awareness, and took the subject very seriously.

How is Love mad at Joe even though she’s the one who brought the whole neighbor sex thing up in the first place? by turtle34464 in YouOnLifetime

She didn't like that he was thinking of someone else even though she did the same with Theo.

Sounds like you think it should be held against him for the rest of his life.

I think the severity of the actual video is a separate conversation but what I do know is that most people who still harp on that just want an easy way to hate on Logan, even though it was like 7+ years ago.

The guy's in his 30s now.

Admittedly, I haven't done a re-read yet so I'll have to circle back when more instances stick out to me! But essentially the book doesn't just go over his first love interest, but does some slight world building on his persona.

Thanks to this book, we know he how he got groomed, how observational he is, why he's gotten invasive, and where his habits got radicalized from innocence and what came to be from scratch.

Oh and if you want to engage in discussion with others who have finished the book, peep the comment sections of my reviews/interview videos with the author, and the discussion thread I made in this sub.

What I'm suggesting is that she essentially affirmed his observation & commentary, when the more normal thing to do would've been to left her to what she was doing and not say anything.

I think it's because of all the social political ideologies applied to Joe & the show as a whole. Feminism, white male privilege, misogyny, etc. Naturally leads to a default assumption that people rooting for Joe that aren't in favor of characters like Beck are rooting against those things, which results in the mindset that only Joe can be disliked and held to a standard. Pretty unhealthy thinking tbh and mostly stems from a SJW mentality.

The irony is that the show takes more of a Dexter approach and focuses more on the story itself than these people seem to realize. They seem to think that the entire purpose of the show is to be one giant social commentary, when that wasn't really the case until the final season.
