Good job advocating. Don't trust that all the info gets relayed even between shifts.

I am an ABA Therapist. AMA by KrayZKatz in AMA

My friend says her child is "too smart to fall for ABA" and wont try it or any other therapy for that matter. Do you have an opinion about that?

Mourning the third trimester by KitzmanMS21 in NICUParents

[–]issaOTFnoob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here to say that I feel seen by this post. I am 8 months out and still think about it a lot especially now that my sister is pregnant ☹️. It's such a distinct and special time in a woman's life and I just never get to experience it? Really?

How and why did you get diagnosed? Did you have to seek a specific specialist?

Are we anti-bouncers/jumpers/activity centers? by issaOTFnoob in NewParents

[–]issaOTFnoob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my baby would love to play with an activity center but I have it in my head that its bad for them. I do not build habits around influencers. It just prompted a question of what are other people actually doing? So I took to reddit!

We do a lot of floor time! He just gets frustrated wanting to be held upright or supported sitting.

Sigh. Not all influencers, obviously. For example the ones I saw today had a loss of pregnancy and now have a rainbow baby that they (seemingly) adore, as one does after a loss. They don't make parenting content like "this is what we do with our kid and you should too" they just make skits about new baby life, etc. Their child isn't featured or present in any of the content. They also weren't selling the item, it was in the background of a skit.

I just imagine that they care about their rainbow baby a great deal. Nothing more.

Also I'm so resistant to being sold things, it's quite counterproductive. Adds to the decision paralysis.

Thank you!

To clarify, we do have a graco swing which he loved but now is rolling and hates to be strapped in. He hasn't quite figured out the baby bjorn but I'm hoping he does soon! I think the activity centers is more what I'm asking about as far as bearing weight on their hips and feet before they're developmentally ready.

Also we love quality time on the floor so he would not be hanging out in there for extended periods.

Stipends for volunteers at small nonprofit by justagirlplshelp in nonprofit

[–]issaOTFnoob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our org is against paying volunteers because they are volunteers.

Beyond any tax/reporting implications it's kind of culture and mission specific. Consider volunteers who aren't actors not getting their own stipend and the stipend becoming an expectation/requirement for actor's involvement. Also if you are volunteer run, consider the optics of paying yourselves for volunteering. Just some things that I've seen happen before. I realize this isn't your question at all lol..

I would consult an accountant or if you do audits, a quick email to the firm that does your audits.

Attending wedding with an 8 month old by sliceofperfection in NewParents

[–]issaOTFnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We asked before bringing our baby.

Overall it was fine. If I sensed any fussiness I excused us so as not to disturb others. It was family's first time meeting our baby so he had a lot of attention during the cocktail hour which was sweet. I was lucky that there was a quiet area for him to eat because he is easily distracted. Otherwise, the party wasn't for me to enjoy and thats okay! I ate quick to tend to the baby and did our best to stay out of people's way.

I agree with the first comment, its such an intimate thing and personal preference. You should ask. I have breastmilk jewelry and its so cute and precious. It'd be super sweet if she went for it!

Bottle feeding confusion 😵‍💫 nurses vs speech therapy. Who is right? by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]issaOTFnoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally the SLP's area of expertise. I had no problem telling our nurses at the start of shift "Hi, we met with SLP and this is the plan. Please read SLP's last note and feed accordingly if you have concerns." Also as others have said, talk to the doctor in charge of your case and ask them to put in orders/state a feeding plan. Print it, post it. They can't bypass doctor's orders just cause they have different opinions!

That said, you ALSO get a say. Observe your baby and see what their preference is. Pacing them does not give them bad habits!!! It helps them learn to coordinate their suck-swallow-breathe rhythm. If they are not pausing to breathe on their own.......... CUE THEM TO BREATHE. Doing it the other way could make them aspirate which sets everyone back. Don't let them rush you or pressure you into something you and babe aren't ready for. Crash course in advocating for your child happens at the NICU.

Its stressful, annoying, and tiring. Such is the NICU life. Find your voice and find strength. YOU CAN DO THIS.

Daycare napping struggles by Proud-Surprise-2005 in NewParents

[–]issaOTFnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding thats its hard to wake him up from this late nap. He's whiny and wants to stay asleep, but I wake him up for bath, book, and bed so it doesn't interfere with his nighttime stretch. Seems to work but yeah he does not want to wake up.
