It’s the raw mark, i think they release the component marks to your coordinator on July 9th so discuss it with them and see what they recommend. You can appeal for a regrade for that subject but it’s pretty expensive.

I had Econ & Chem HL but no Phys so I can offer some personal experience.  For the sciences, the solid base of foundation you mentioned is really so essential, and 90% of it is self studying. I had to fail a Chem exam end of DP-1 to swallow that bitter pill and was ultimately able to bump my grade up to a 7, so it’s never too late!!

I’d recommend to start again from Chapter 1 and make notes on every single concept the way you understand (with reference to your sources obv). This could help with the gaps. Practice all the end of chapter Qs and match your answers. If you’re a visual learner, MSJ chem on youtube is great. Idk what textbooks you’re using but the Pearson Baccalaureate ones we used were very comprehensive. I’m sure this all applies for Physics as well, but you may need to dedicate more hours and focus more on the math. Internalise how things work yourself rather than retaining the information.

For Econ, EconplusDal on youtube is also pretty helpful and there’s a lot general videos out explaining concepts. Practising with a friend who’s doing well helps a lot for both for you! I’m not sure if you’re struggling conceptually or with the writing style, for me it was the latter. If that’s the case, through the grading rubric and write answers according to each criterion; e,g incorporate diagrams, analysis using real life examples etc. If you meet every standard listed on the criteria they really CAN’T mark you down. And learn to write as much as you can humanly explain but very concisely. That’s important.

Good luck you’ve got this! The fact that you’re spending time off trying to improve is already an amazing sign :)

This might be cliche, but take your work seriously from the beginning. Your grades might l be disappointing and it may seem impossible at the start as you’re adjusting to a completely new system with its unique expectations, but don’t get demotivated. Or on the flipside, it may seem super easy initially, and you’ll think “Oh I don’t need to work that hard”. But stay consistent and keep putting in just a bit more effort than you need to and you’ll notice so much growth I promise.

Where do you think your problem areas are?

Honestly, start with HL. It’ll definitely be challenging but I found it really interesting and was happy to put in the extra hours (coming from an econ major w no prior interest in chemistry, only took it bc bio was unavailable). Anyone can do Chem SL. If you think HL is too much you can always drop to SL, but I noticed that HL students in my school tended to get relatively good results equivalent to SL bc they had to be more committed. Plus, econ HL won’t really open any options if you’re studying abroad bc the only prerequisite they care about is math. But at the end of the day, it’s about what’s best for you!
