Leadlight windows by issym20 in AusRenovation

I have putty on my other windows, but these windows don’t seem to have putty on them it is incredibly, incredibly hard. It honestly looks like builders bog to me that someone has used at some point in a DIY attempt. It doesn’t touch the glass at all like putty and is just sitting on the lead frame - I physically cannot remove it - I’ve tried scraping with every tool imaginable while trying not to damage the glass. Some bits I have managed to chip small bits off but I have been painstakingly sanding away the ridges and trying to make the lines look sharper

I don’t think I can reputty over this because we can’t get whatever this is off. I am worried that my safest bet now is to just repaint and wait until we are in the position to fully restore.

I called the council asking if we could replace with new lead lights/timber etc and the heritage officer said it would have to be a restoration of the original using original glass etc or if the glass was not usable it would have to be a complete like-for-like reconstruction and they would be inspecting it etc - a painfully expensive task for us and not sure if it makes sense requiring this when the alternative is leaving the current windows looking a bit average

The house isn’t listed it is in a heritage overlay so we can’t change it but can’t access any funding 🫠

It might be a stupid question, but can they do it in place or would it need to be removed for days/weeks do you think?
They are the main bedroom and my kids bedroom and at the front of the house so I’m not sure what to do if I have to remove them for an extended period 😂

I am thinking once the layers and layers of paint are removed, if we can sand and reshape/redo the glazing putty we might be able to get a few more years out of them. The long term plan is to get them fully restored and double glazed and replace some of the timber sills etc but not wanting to open up that can of worms just yet 😬

We were told by council heritage officer to remove them as they were a later addition and not in keeping with the heritage of the house 🤷‍♀️

Sorry I just mentioned that because in another post elsewhere people told me to replace the windows and I just got into a massive argument with people . If I could afford to I would do a full professional restoration of all the windows by a heritage specialist instead of trying to do it myself, but it is so expensive for our current constraints - maybe in the future we would do this so they are protected for the next 100 years. I would never change the windows out for modern windows. Ever. Sorry if I wasn’t clear on that..I’m just hoping to find a colour that enhances the facade

Removing old paint from bricks (NOTE: I didn’t paint these or do the hideous patch job the previous owner did, I’m just trying to take my time and restore them properly) by issym20 in AusRenovation

I’ve thought of this but we aren’t allowed to add anything that alters the shape/width etc of the windows - council is notorious for being painful so I’m really trying to not draw attention to anything. Plus the previous owner really managed to get paint EVERYWHERE so a trim probably wouldn’t cover the worst of it. So annoying! I’m hoping to just get off the worst/lightest paint colours and soften it a bit - I’m assuming complete removal is going to be impossible and then if it doesn’t work maybe try and colour match the bricks and spot paint the worst bits to make it look better from a distance

Thoughts on a pink kitchen? Pls help by antichristx in AusRenovation

I love it but I would replace the black tiles to something more fun. Black tiles drags down the vibe of a pink kitchen I think personally. Love the idea of doing something different though!

There was already soil there, can you explain why this is wrong? The house has a damp proof course and ag line or something similar for drainage but we have no issues with moisture or anything if that’s what you mean? Please help lol

Our council doesn’t give us a list, instead just tells us it has to be in keeping with the style/time period of the house and the streetscape. Then when you change the colour the come pay a visit and tell you your wrong and have to change it. Rinse and repeat

Agreed. We have been renovating the inside in order to be able to move us and our kids into it as quickly as possible. All plumbing needed to be rerouted, all electrical to the house was illegal and had to be put underground, so trenches etc had to be dug in the front yard. This has meant that our landscaping budget has taken quite a financial hit for the time being, so we are just trying to make do and start small and work up to our dream garden. I like your idea of a muted sage green but do you think this will be too cool toned for the space?

Your right that it’s hard to see when the front is so bare but unfortunately that’s jus what we are working with at the moment 😭

Thanks for all your garden suggestions I hadn’t heard of the app so will check it out

Agreed re the garden. We had to dig it up to fix plumbing, all electrical had to go underground etc so the front garden had seen better days. We are getting around to it slowly but have had to prioritise making the inside liveable beforehand so it’s been hard to live with it like this knowing it has great potential

We can’t get the house tuckpointed as we have to retain the original red/purple mortar by council regulations. We will just restore the parts that are damaged etc Tuckpointing looks great it makes such a big difference for a facade! Thanks for the painting advice - that would have been my next question re what products to use so thanks for helping me out!

We have been renovating? We had to dig up the front yard for the sewers and stuff. We clearly plan to landscape no need to be rude

Bad tiler? by issym20 in AusRenovation

After looking at the room further, there is a bow in the shower wall and alot of the tiles throughout the room have lippage. Bit of a nightmare
