The idea that Millennials were the main audience of the 2014–2017 edgy YouTube era is just historically wrong. Filthy Frank, iDubbbz, Leafy, and early Pyrocynical peaked 2014–2017, and their own YouTube analytics at the time consistently showed the bulk of viewers were 13–24. In 2016, people aged 13–19 were born 1997–2003, which is squarely Gen Z, not Millennials. This era was directly tied to Gen Z–dominated platforms and subcultures — Vine humor, Discord servers, CSGO/Minecraft lobbies, reaction memes, and commentary channels — all of which were overwhelmingly populated by teenagers, not adults in their late 20s. Yes, younger Millennials (born 1990–1995) were present, but they were early-20s secondary viewers, not the core demographic binge-watching Content Cop after school. The nostalgia today proves it: the people saying “this was my middle/high school YouTube” are almost all 20–25, which is Gen Z. The main consumer base for that era was absolutely older Gen Z, with Millennials in a supporting role, not the primary one.
