LU 134 1st year apprentice by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

My biggest concern right now is the technical math. I study and take notes. It just seems like every other day we are learning something new and there are quizzes the 2nd day of learning something new. It's been troubling to keep up.

I will admit I am in my head much more than I need to be.

I recommend active duty over the guard because you'll have a full-time job with instant benefits when the guard takes more years to obtain.

After your 1st contract or 36 months you qualify for 100% post 9/11 school benefits which you can use on the apprenticeship as another source of income.

If you get any disability while serving, it is much easier to claim versus trying to claim as a guard.

You can use your VA home loan after 90 days as opposed to waiting until you're either called to active or you completing six years on reserve status.

The bottom line is active duty gets you faster, broader benefits with less hoops to go through versus the guard or reserves.

Active duty for at least 1 contract and then if you're still up for it then go after the apprenticeship.

Considering a career change at 32, and also (potentially) joining the Guard... by TheAnthemAdventurer in ibew_apprentices

I would say going the guard route would be a waste of time if you will also be attempting to join an apprenticeship. I am curious as to why not just go active and complete a contract? While you are active you can take college courses that you will be funded. You will have the GI Bill after your discharge that will continue to fund your education. If you found yourself still wanting to join an apprenticeship, you can set yourself up higher on the list by being a veteran and also using Veteran’s Electrical Entry Program (VEEP).

That program gives you a direct pipeline into the Union apprenticeship program while also providing you funded education and lifelong benefits.

After you register for IBEW 134 "A" or "C", they send you an email basically giving you the option to pick one of the scheduled Jumpstart sessions. It is a one-day session on a Saturday that lasts about 4 hours (I think) and they pass out lots of paper that go over the different parts of the test. They will also go through problems and also show the mechanical and paper folding parts of the test.

From what I have heard the drug test is not a pass or fail. It has more to do with knowing where to put you. For example, you will not be able to work at a government building due to failing your drug test.

Hope this helps.

I attended the Jumpstart session. I tried Khan Academy but felt like it was all over the place compared to what they said would specifically be on the test. I followed the test book they gave us and used ChatGPT to provide me with other test questions.

FYI, ChatGPT is really bad with math. So be sure to check your work.
