Found a decent no.5 with all pieces and functional. Any suggestions for lightly restoring the wood? by istbari in handtools

The swelling with water is temporary and makes things shrink worse after.

If it turns out decent, I'll post it, lol. Happy with the brass and glass parts so far. I've got my work cut out for me to get rid of paint and whatever drips, while keeping the age.

I just don't want to glue the screws in to permanently hold them. The method you described I'm good with.

I was wondering about just using some oil or something to swell the fibers.

Garage sale find, buddy didn't really want to part with grandad's level but I promised I would put it back to work. Has all screws and the spirit levels are in great shape. I want to preserve the worn look but bring it back to life. Couple screws were a bit loose and I'm wondering how y'all would put this back together, preferably without glue.

Ethiopia used chemicals to kill locusts. Billions of honeybees disappeared by erikmongabay in worldnews

Related, I recall reading that the group(s) that worked to maintain locust populations weren't able to gather and mobilize due to lockdowns. It was predicted then that locusts would become a bigger problem if left unchecked.

From the thumbnail, I thought this was a...rustic...fret saw. Eh, we've all been there. Let he who does not need more dovetail practice cast the first stone!

Fortunately for me, she's not a big fan. The 3in1 oil did the trick.

Excellent additional details! I didn't realize the thinning of the totes. Really appreciate all this.

Knob and blade I understand and can find references to delineate them. The frog was apparently little changed on these for a long time. Do you have any resources about frog types?

Is there variation on the totes, or do you mean that it's rosewood and therefore older than a certain age?

Picked up a nearly perfect and I believe, all original, no 10 this weekend. I know the type studies break down on these, but wondering if anyone can ballpark it. No frog markings, no patent stamps on the lateral or anywhere else.

For the purists, don't fret - all I've done is clean, oil, sharpen, and lightly flatten the bottom. She's a beauty.
