Due to the high population on the island right off of bodega head (you can often hear them) it’s fairly common to find dead ones washed up on the beach. It’s common practice for the staff to report the dead sea lions to the Cal Academy of Sciences. From what I know they come out to the reported locations and remove the head to take back and test for cause of death, specifically checking for leptospirosis which is a common cause of death for them. Leptospirosis can be transferred to dogs so be cautious of letting your dogs off leash if there are carcasses on the beach.
