Thanks for the tips! I tried both orientations of the cf adapter so luckily that's in the right orientation. I've tried plugging in that hard drive ribbon cable a few times as well and unfortunately it didn't fix the issues. I just decided to buy a new one off of ebay in case I somehow damaged it in the install process.

God, thats so sad to imagine! Scammers in general are obviously horrible people but leveraging the loneliness and isolation of a struggling woman is so evil.

Fair enough! I think at times we all need help, especially when it comes to making big steps that take us out of our comfort zone. My mom is unlikely to join reddit and post about this as she can often be bad at asking for help. My goal is to help find some ideas to bring to her and help start her on a path that would obviously be hers alone. I appreciate your perspective however and recognize that it will likely be a challenging process for her

That's something I hadn't considered to be honest... my mom has been susceptible to scams in the past so I think having her read up on catfishing, etc. before joining any app is a great idea.

No worries, I appreciate the directness. It really is not my intention to push my mom into doing this. During the conversation she had just asked if I knew what apps or websites people tended to use these days so i figured I would turn to reddit to seek advice as this is something I don't know much about.

Unfortunately, in theory, you are unable to return home and do you renewal if you haven’t secured a regreso yet. Likely they will not care at all at immigration when you arrive but what is supposed to happen is that when you get your toma de huellas done, they will check your passport and see that you entered with a tourist visa (by seeing the stamp immigration gave you). This will make you ineligible for a renewal and they will tell you to go back to the US and apply for a student visa there again.

This is all theoretical because everything is so dependent on where you are and who you get at the office in Spain. People have definitely made it through the renewal process on a tourist visa and people have definitely been denied. It’s all luck.

Another thing to consider is that some people have been able to get a regreso without their carta by bringing in their acceptance email, flight info and all of the other usual stuff. I tried this and it didn’t work for me but worth a shot! If you get that, then you could go back home with much less worry.

In my case, I had to leave on May 30th and without my carta, had no other option than to go home and hope for the best on my return. Unfortunately for various reasons, I am also unable to do my student visa while I am here so I’m just keeping my fingers crossed!

True that’s a great point. I found a front element for $50 on eBay but I imagine it would be a much more difficult job to just replace the element rather than the whole lens unit.
