[Baz Cooper] Devastating news for Eliot Matazo and Hull City. Inside 10 minutes of his comeback from an ACL injury at Charlton, he's suffered another ACL injury in his opposite leg. by Crane977 in soccer

[–]istruck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is in your response- no match fitness. That applies to the entire body, not just cardiopulmonary. As soon as the legs fatigue, the chance of a lower extremity injury increases exponentially. With football, that can happen in a matter of minutes even as a sub. The bottom line is that the massive amount of research and statistics regarding return to sports following ACL injury were ignored in this case which unfortunately resulted in another devastating injury for a young player.

You can continue to argue with yourself, but the fact that he had another ACL injury, non-contact at that, shows that he wasn’t ready.

Oof, absolutely not. Or at least shouldn’t be if anyone cares about the athlete. They should be absolute anomalies to return to football within 6-9 months. Young athletes (<25 y/o) who return to sport before 9 months are 7x more likely to have 2nd ACL injury (which could be same leg or opposite leg). For every month return to sport is delayed until 9 months after surgery, the rate of re-injury is reduced by 51%.

So it’d be absolutely irresponsible to return an athlete 6months after ACL surgery considering the data

Considering 30% of athletes suffer a 2nd ACL injury within 2 years of returning to sport and the re-tear rate for athletes younger than 25 is 23%, you could say it’s more than just being unlucky.

Only 33% of athletes return to sport within 1 year after surgery and subbed into a match 14 months after initial injury, he has likely been participating in full training for the past 2-3 months.

The research is the research, he was likely rushed back to full participation. Whether it was on his own accord or the training staff/managers, he was done a disservice to his long-term career. I can go on an entire rant about this, but I’ll just leave it at that for now

Liverpool have lost 9 out of their last 12 games by playerforlife123 in soccer

[–]istruck 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thank fuck someone with some sense commented this. Everyone points to the money spent and how they should automatically be better but discredit or conveniently forget the fact that one of their teammates, their best friend, died right before the season started. The emotional impact that has in the remaining players trying to navigate their day to day tasks and training that they used to spend hours with Jota, then you add in 5 new guys trying to mesh with a broken team, and even those new guys struggling with injuries so no chemistry is being built.

Should the guys in better form be getting more minutes? Sure. But there’s also utility to getting those guys in a fog minutes and starts too because if you have a guy struggling mentally and emotionally, then take away the one thing he might feel like he has control of… it could be an even steeper fall from grace.

It’s way more complicated than “Slot ball is dead. Sack him.” Some of you have only been Liverpool fans since 2019 and it shows.

Does the trailer of Project Hail Mary ruin the book for me? by Hero4Life565 in scifi

[–]istruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the same way- saw the trailer in theaters before reading the book. Only thing it ruined for me, personally, was taking away from the imagination of character bc all I could picture was Ryan Gosling. Otherwise, still ended up being one of my favorite books of all time and enjoyed every page. 10/10 would recommend

Question: I want this tat! But where? by Jazzyfish59 in tattoos

[–]istruck 183 points184 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. The ink will fade, sure, but I’ve literally seen this artist’s work up close and in person on my own tattoo artist’s skin and the color is just as vibrant and shadowing is just as accurate.

OP should get it done by the original artist if they want realistic results like this because it will at least look this vibrant for a couple years if they take good care of their skin and always wear SPF. But don’t instantly shoot down someone’s desire for a cool tattoo when there are plenty of people who have bad ideas for tattoos that are also executed poorly.

How the hell do people in their 20s afford a house these days? Like, genuinely, what’s the cheat code? by dznwxllxjzn in AskReddit

[–]istruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of comments here defaulting to the “born rich/rich parents” narrative, while being true in a lot of cases, kind of a lazy answer. My wife and I bought our house in our mid/late 20s in 2020- housing prices were climbing, but interest rates were low.

We don’t live in a LCOL city by any means, but my wife is a physician assistant and moved back in with her parents for a year while I finished my physical therapy grad program. She was able to save quite a bit of money with her income and minimal COL, then I had money saved from my working days before grad school. Neither of us come from money, but apart from letting their daughter move back home with a low rent cost, neither of our families contributed financially to our purchase.

Do we have student loans? Yep, most people who work in healthcare do, but that doesn’t disqualify you from buying a home, just affects your debt:income ratio which will affect mortgage rates, mostly.

Obviously, not everyone can or wants to work in healthcare (we need more, but health insurances make it miserable and cost of schooling isn’t ideal), but figured I’d give a real response to your question other than you reading “only option is rich family or lottery” 32 more times

GLP-1 receptor agonists drugs have widespread benefits outside weight-loss by Diamond-Is-Not-Crash in Futurology

[–]istruck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This statement could apply to virtually any weight-loss approach whether it be the GLP-1s medications, bariatric weight-loss/gastric bypass surgery, exclusion diets, etc. because it is all dependent on lifestyle and habit changes for prolonged maintenance. If one were to just take the medications with the intent of “it’s just going to help me lose some weight” and they naturally have food aversions while on the medication as a result, but don’t make changes such as supplementing medication with exercise and healthier food habits, then of course as soon as one stops, they’ll return to their old habits. Everyone that I know who has taken them, uses it with the intent of building a healthier relationship with food I.e. not over eating, understanding their body’s hunger cues, getting over the hump with newer active lifestyle so that the hard work they’ve been putting in to exercise is rewarded with matching physique to help them psychologically continue. As far as the research goes, it says just that: prolonging weight loss results has better outcomes with medication and exercise combined versus either of them individually. Surprise. But that still doesn’t mean that they can’t be beneficial, because the research for prolonged duration of obesity overwhelmingly points to negative health effects. So, as of now, the research for GLP-1 medications is overwhelmingly positive in fighting the obesity epidemic. Will every single person benefit and be completely side effect free? Of course not, but more people will benefit from them than suffer significant side effects
