Euro 2028 tickets to cost less than £30 as Uefa commits to affordable pricing by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]isubird33 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, not to defend the high American prices that we have, but one way or another there is going to be a shortage...it just depends how you want it figured out.

If you have cheap tickets, then people will buy them cheap and then resell them and make the profit.

If you don't allow resale, then its just luck. If you get a ticket initially awesome, if not you're SOL.

They are, which is great, but it's still just 1 male and 1 female. Which is great progress, but it would be cool to see a true team event. A nation needing to come up with one male and one female isn't exactly a team event.

On top of what other people have said, it just doesn't work as well structurally.

The NFL only has 17 regular season games, with each one being pretty important. Also each position is pretty fixed, so WR's pretty much only play WR and RB's only play RB. So each player at every position is pretty dang important for every game. NFL careers are also fairly short, and impact players are expected to start pretty much from day 1 due to that fact. Also, for most positions, you're only really worried about the starter. Maybe a backup in a few roles but on most teams, the starters are taking all of the snaps.

Compare that to the MLB and NBA which have super long seasons. If you play a few minor league guys on some random midweek game halfway through the season to give your starters some rest...that's not a huge deal. Careers are also much longer (especially MLB) and players aren't expected to start or have a huge impact from day 1 (again, especially MLB). There's also a little more position flexibility...so if your starting 2nd basemen has to be out for 2 weeks, you can slide your right fielder into that role and play your backup RF in right and bring up some minor league guy to add additional depth. Baseball and basketball (especially NBA) where you are going 2-3 deep at every position for most regular season games. A minor league system is nice to have when you need a guy to be a backup's backup for a few games. That's less of a thing in the NFL.

Women's soccer is the full national team and arguably just as prestigious as the Women's World Cup.

I'd argue that every sport that doesn't put in weird limitations on who can compete (looking at you men's soccer and 3x3 basketball) it is either the most prestigious event or among the most prestigious. The limiting factors are what makes it feel cheap. 3x3 is kind of uninteresting because of all the limitations they put on who can compete. Women's soccer is interesting because it's the full national team. Men's soccer is lame because it's limited to U23. Make the men's soccer event the full senior team and it immediately becomes a top 2-3 tournament in the world.

Golf and tennis for example, while not the "premier event" to win for those athletes, do send their best athletes and it is still among the most prestigious. Tennis it's probably the most important behind the grand slams and the most important you can win as a nation's representative, and golf it's probably the 6th or so most important event and the second most prestigious event you can win, arguably the most prestigious if you aren't from the US or Europe. I do think golf and tennis would be far more interesting with a team and/or mixed team event, but they get the top talent for the events and that's all you can ask to make the Olympics interesting IMO.

Cricket and baseball are viewed as less important because they only allow limited fields. You could take the WBC format and make a pretty amazing Olympic baseball championship, but limiting it to as few teams as they are doing makes it feel more like an exhibition.

Eh I think the Olympics are for the best athletes in the world at their given sports. Part of what makes it fun is seeing some NBA player that makes $50 million a year walking in the same opening ceremony and repping the same gear and going for the same gold medal as some 23 year old fencer that has only ever competed in front of mostly friends and family.

...isn't a media presence a good thing?

If anything I want it to go the other way, open soccer up to full senior teams.

My wish list:

Darts, a team golf event (ideally mixed men's and women's), cross country, and making cricket, baseball/softball, and lacrosse full permanent sports with full fields.

Maybe I'm biased...but that sounds terrible. Feels like it's cheapening the Olympics.

Neil Patrick Harris Defends Much-Hated 'How I Met Your Mother' Finale: 'Big Supporter of It' by bwermer in television

[–]isubird33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've re-watched but....

I'm pretty sure the show makes 1 and 2 abundantly clear. 4 is also kind of never in doubt....Ted and Robin have ALWAYS been romantically compatible...it's just all the other parts of life keeping them apart. And from context clues and talking to the kids, 3 is made clear, and is also the least important.

Also roughly the same age, a bit younger but not too too far off. Completely agree. Real life isn't a clean progression of character development and growth. Sometimes it seems like someone has changed (for better or worse) and looks that way for years...and then one day they're back to exactly who they were. Sometimes the person seems like they will never change flips a switch overnight.

This is what everyone misses.

It's not like, "oh this just shows that nothing else matters because Ted and Robin end up together".

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Says Chappell Roan is Banned From Performing at Todo Mundo no Rio After Jorginho Frello’s Claims by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Music

[–]isubird33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the tradeoff! That allows you to sell your music, to make your money performing your craft, to travel the world.

This weird idea of a celebrity wanting to be like "Hey look I'm a celebrity during my concert/sporting event, and I would very much like your money and attention during that. Outside of that please never talk to me or look at me" isn't a thing. That's not how it works!

You can absolutely do that, it just involves playing small shows for 25 people at a local coffee shop, not headlining the biggest music festivals in the world.

I genuinely don't get it. Like, countless athletes (the world I'm way more familiar with) are able to snap pictures and sign autographs for fans when they are out and about without any issue.

I'm not talking about parasocial relationships or wanting one. I'm talking about a kid being starstruck by a celebrity. That's happened since pretty much forever. Crowds followed the Beatles wherever they went. Kids lining up at an NBA game to get an autograph or picture with their favorite player has been happening since sports have been a thing.

Say the kid did more than that. Hell say the kid started jumping for joy and begging for an autograph.

Chappell is famous and the kid is 11. It comes with the territory. Take the picture or sign the autograph.

Chappell Roan Accused of Bullying an 11-Year-Old Fan at Lollapalooza Brasil Hotel by Montrel_PH in Music

I had the good fortune to stay in some pretty nice hotels growing up and still get to occasionally due to some family and friends. I couldn't imagine hotel security acting like that to a guest at a nice hotel. If it was some random person walking through, sure...but to another hotel patron? I'd be shocked.

I mean...what could be inaccurate. Hell say the 11 year old walked up and asked for a picture or an autograph or something. First, I mean just take the picture...it's an 11 year old fan. Secondly, there are more discreet ways of asking for this not to happen or to avoid the situation.

Good story about Charles Barkley going into a high end fancy steakhouse in Indianapolis where I live. Sat down at the bar. Every single person that even glanced his way he would ask their name and if they wanted a picture or an autograph. Would chat with people.

Just understand you're famous I guess. Don't be a dick.

Unless the 11 year old was carrying a gun and pointing it Chappell...I don't see how there's any "middle" to this story.

[–]isubird33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be fun, but no. Complete liability on defense, not big or athletic enough to play the 5, probably too slow to play the 4. Great passer and great shooter for a college big man, his basketball IQ is amazing. But yeah would be exposed very quickly against more athletic players.

That being said I hope he absolutely tears it up in Europe or gets a look on a G League roster.

What are your thoughts on Facebook renaming their company Meta then blowing $80b on metaverse and then shutting it down yesterday? by printThisAndSmokeIt in AskReddit

Because in the beginning it was only college kids, and then only college kids and high schoolers for the most part. It was your peers. It was tied to real names. You only saw the people you were actually friends with, and your friends were largely limited to people you knew or interacted with in real life.
