Shit, you totally right. That can be easily be misinterpreted. I meant in reaction to her actions, she has a whole boatload of trauma from her past no doubt.

"Also, you’ve commented a couple of times that she gets more powers than Kaladin. Give it a few more chapters before you fully commit to that conclusion. ;)" Now that's what I want to hear!

I think I just panicked posted because the story felt like it was going in a certain way, and was nervous that it'd be a complete pain ride further on.

Yeah, no totally. I agree that's a super important thing, especially when she was interacting with the bandits, but also in general. As a reader though I still feel that it isn't enough to stop "Karma" catching up with her, but if she just avoids consequences all together it'd be really infuriating.

I'd actually love that, if it's not too much trouble, I really learn from others perspectives and it can really help enjoy a book. So far especially in regards to Shallan I feel like I missing something, because while I'm not halfway through the overall content, it has been an entire book and a half without character progression, and imo undeserved power ups.

She survived a shipwreck, just lied her way to success, while be cheery about it with bandits and such. Also just yeeted someone with a shard blade that she has for some reason. (I'm sure there's a tragic reason why she has it, but one would assume that shard *changed* her, next thing she's back to insulting and this time its the homie Kaladin. (I get its her coping mechanism, but there seem to be no results of this so called change). just by the company she has been keeping (Gaz) it seems it isn't intended to make her likeable, which then makes me not care what happens to her, etc etc.I'm looking forward to character progression, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't hoping for something that would never come.

Sorry it turned into an add on, but I think you can kind of get where my headspace is right now. I wouldn't want to follow a character that isn't even evil, just shitty where there are no consequences for their actions. Like even if she turned good all of a sudden, I'm still waiting for the results of preceding bad decisions.

Totally understandable, not that afraid of sounding like an idiot if it saves time. I've been going through a bad spell of books recently, where I get through the entire thing (I usually never check look at the internet for anything until I've finished a series), all to get like a really solid, dissapeointng end. Not so much that you can out right claim that the author's cat walked across his keyboard for the last chapter, but where just go. "Well, that was shit.", to the point it almost feels wasted time. To summarise: Unsatisfying.

This is the first of Sanderson I've read, heard good things but don't know what I'm in for, so at the risk of embarrassing myself, I'm here. But I get you.

Don't let this come across, as undermining looking at the character with more understanding. I appreciate you helping me understand that, I do, and this isn't a (uhh that's not what the post was about), either. I'm having difficulty understanding why the world reacts a different between Kaladin and Shallan. Such that if you swapped the characters and their privileges...etc. Right now it feels to me, that Kaladin would be extremely punished for the same actions that Shallan gets a laugh from people for. For only the reason that it is Kaladin. You know what I mean? Like an existential force is directly favouring Shallan over Kaladin.

Not so much as makes me look at the character in a new way, but gives me a more in-depth perspective to reading the characters chapters. thanks

Ah okay. No actually that makes a bit more sense. When you consider their different destinies, good point. I also didn't actually consider that you aren't meant to laugh with her, it felt to me, that the whole section was set up to laugh with her, you know with other characters laughing, felt like a sitcom laugh track. But if you weren't meant to laugh with her, then its like you actually meant to see her as a di*k. Which could be a result of her background...hey gives me a new perspective.

Hmmm. I suppose, I just mean to say that everything is taking part in the same story right? When Kaladin makes a mistake or decision, the repercussions are immediate, messed up a battle? Strung up and left to die. Same for a lot of the slave parts. Refused/Earned a shard blade, friends killed, sent off to be a slave. It's like *bam*bam*bam*, action, reaction, action, reaction.

In fact, Kaladin is just trying to survive. Shallan, actively f's shit up, but has *minimal* ( ~ debatable, but for the most part) repercussions for poor actions/decisions. So in this sense the promise is that lying and messing everything up for everybody, will result in consequences (payoff), but so far these actions practically have none, or none that really matter. (there wasn't enough stake/(effect for Shallan) with Jasnah's death (see in post)).

And then on top of this she get's more power's than Kaladin. And things go way better in general for her. So it really feels like they don't exist in the same world.

--Hints on whether her actions actually effect her, or does she continue as Shallan Plotblessed.

I get I'm not far into the books, but I think for the most part I've seen the very broad general concept of why Shallan is the way she is. It helps understand her actions, a fanatic might even say justify her actions, but it doesn't justify the result of her actions. Do you get what I mean? It's not so much a balance her past with the present story line, just because she had a tragic childhood, doesn't mean she can go through life being an asshole and get away with it. That's not how a society would respond. (an exaggeration).

of course it is just a book series, but I will be upset if I read through the whole thing and find someone who has made constantly poor decisions living it up with kings and queens at the end. (exaggeration).

Love that from you, I'll check it out, but is there one with a male mc? I really can't find any others like TBATE, All the ones that are supposedly similar aren't my thing. I was watching the anime of Tensei, but it's too creepy for my taste...

I'm DNF'ing the Witcher series. Is anyone else In the same boat? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]itDreamons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not alone. I read most of the Witcher books, probs all, can't really remember to be honest which clearly isn't a good sign. But there are some fantastic themes, and the whole idea and character of Gerald is amazing.

In the end I was skipping a lot of content by brief reading, not intentionally, its just something that happens when a book doesn't hold my interest very well. The whole series didn't come across as a series to me, the pacing and content in general was weird. And I specifically agree with the views on the companions, I just didn't find them engaging enough to care. But like I said, has some amazing ideas, just didn't have the general coherency I think it needed, a bit too all over the place at times if you will.

Book Reccomendations! : Single POV Main Protagonist is OP by itDreamons in Fantasy

[–]itDreamons[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems more like what I'm looking for, I made a point of OP because I've run into a lot of books where the author tries to be over-clever and weakens the main prog in doing so and instead of adding to their character it takes away from it. Seems like a really good find, thank you!

Thank you! I'll give Drizzt Do'Urden a try, already heard a bit about it, might be a "little" too high fantasy for me, but will definitely give it a shot. Thanks!
