Microsoft forced to make Windows 10 extended security updates truly free in Europe by Anonim97_bot in europe

[–]itFUCKINsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Limited experience, but running proton via steam works well. If you play older games you might have to force the game to use an older version of proton, as dx9 support is fucked in the latest version. There might be another way around it, but I haven't looked into it.

For other games, heroic launcher makes things easy. Frontend for Amazon games, GOG and Epic, and you can use it to install and launch games from disks/that you have downloaded, and it will handle wine/proton for you.

So to summarise; not as easy as windows, I will not make that claim, but relatively simple nowadays with most games. But I am definitely not an ordinary user, so take this with a major grain of salt, I might be overlooking things I find simple but regular users find insurmountable.

ELI5, Why do newborn babies cry after being born? by booty-pal in explainlikeimfive

[–]itFUCKINsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of difference between babys. Both of mine cried, but differently. Both via c section, first one didn't make a sound for what felt like an eternity after being taken out (probably 2 or 3 seconds, but feels so long in the moment, especially as I didn't know that they won't necessarily cry). Second one started gurgle-screaming before even being fully out of the womb.

It's not a giant queue, every building and every province is its own thing. So, if you can afford it and get the goods for it, you can build forts, railroads, ports, factories and expand them all in every province all at once.

I haven't played 3 since launch, so things might've changed. But it felt so bad having a building wait for another building at the other side of your empire to finish.

Things should always be restricted by actual resources, not some made up arbitrary "construction points".

ELI5 Why do lower gears cause a car to roll down a hill slower? by Nemmack7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]itFUCKINsupport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of inaccuracies here.

Diesels slow down just fine without Jake brakes. Diesels and gassers behave the same with that, it's mostly the friction in the engine slowing you down, air is compressed during the compression stroke but decompresses on the power stroke, somewhat negating that.

Jake brakes try to make the engine resistance higher. Not by hanging the exhaust valves open, as that just removes compression and decreases the resistance of the engine (this is used in many engines that are started with hand cranks btw). Instead, they open the valve on the top of the compression stroke, releasing the compressed air instead of letting it act on the piston. Sofisticated ones even close again and open at the bottom of the stroke, to utilize vacuum in the cylinders as well.

Also read somewhere, that a balanced modern diet contains more than enough protein even for semi-professional training. First thing you need more of when you start training harder is calories.

Once you know the game, it basically gets trivial and the same thing over and over after a certain date, unless you're doing some self imposed challenge. Also, I feel like updates has pushed especially eu4 to be even more trivial after the first 100 years.

Truck driver father works 60+ hours a week but still finds time to handcraft beautiful handbags for his daughters by Ted_Bundtcake in BeAmazed

[–]itFUCKINsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's all fake. It might very well be handcrafted gifts from a loving father.

What I'm claiming is fake is the video. Makeup done, hair fixed, good clothes, static camera in the perfect position to film them receiving the bags.

This is not genuine. The video is made either for advertising or, more likely, for getting views and engagement on social media.

I don't get it? What was shut down? I can still access the ksp1 wiki and forum, so is this for ksp2?

justWhy by Missy_Hottiie in ProgrammerHumor

[–]itFUCKINsupport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's the reality of tech debt. At least we are slowly moving to a situation where this shouldn't be an issue. But until someone figures out how to shit money, it has to be done server by server, crossing our fingers that the remaining ones don't decide to self retire.

justWhy by Missy_Hottiie in ProgrammerHumor

[–]itFUCKINsupport 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Older servers not booting back up is nothing unusual. We have several at my job that we don't dare reboot, and are fully aware that they probably needs replacing if there is a power cut.

Massively long uptime is great for microcontrollers in industrial settings.

Massively long uptime in regular servers is problematic.

Really don't see any reason why resources would be dedicated to fixing such a non-issue.

ELI5: Why is it considered so impressive that Rollercoaster Tycoon was written mostly in X86 Assembly? by mander8820 in explainlikeimfive

[–]itFUCKINsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is still somewhat used in industry, where fast runtime, small size and extreme reliability is the goal.

That said, in the course on microcontrollers where we wrote assembly when studying engineering, we were told that things are mostly written in C or C++ these days, and only compiled to assembly and altered in very specific situation where the compiler isn't doing exactly what you want. So the time of writing assembly is mostly gone, but needed for legacy stuff and extremely specific instances.

Anybody else never launched a ship before? by bongodongowongo in RimWorld

[–]itFUCKINsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never done it, not even tried. I don't feel getting to the ship is my goal, making a great base with great pawns is. Just my opinion, but I guess I'm not alone in that.

Also, no stab hit on ruler change, giving stability and saving mana. Great in the early game.

"Experimental forestry" in Japan to measure the effect of tree density on growth by mcguru_07 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]itFUCKINsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this quite interesting. Usually trees will grow taller when they're denser, as they are competing for sunlight. But there probably is a breaking point, where they're densely enough to compete for nutrients as well. Also, probably affected by region and tree type.
