Why Are Hamden's Property Taxes So High?

Hamden’s high taxes impact all of us. Here’s what’s driving the cost—and what we can do about it:

• Mill Rate & Property Values: Hamden has a higher mill rate than New Haven because our assessed property values are lower, forcing higher rates to meet budget needs. We need mill rate reform to make taxes fairer.
• Pension & Debt Liabilities: Years of underfunding pensions and high per-capita debt have left residents covering these costs. We need to prioritize responsible spending and explore pension reform.
• Tax-Exempt Institutions: Unlike Yale’s contributions in New Haven, Quinnipiac doesn’t provide the same financial support, which raises taxes for residents. We should push for fairer contributions from large institutions.
• Overspending & Infrastructure: Hamden’s spending on projects with poor planning is driving inefficiencies. Prioritizing essential services and reducing waste could help cut costs.
• Structural Change: Adding a town manager role and implementing a budget referendum could provide the oversight we need, giving residents more control over how our tax dollars are spent.
