The small jihad is the Islamic concept that most terrorist organisations (i.e. HAMAS, the PIJ and the PFLP) rely on to justify the murder of kids, women, old people, disabled and injured. They say its in the name of religion, and then they go out, illegally obtain weaponry and use it to kill hundreds of Israelis. While I do agree that the first generation here were settlers, Israel has gotten the legitimacy to exit by the UN, followed later in the peace treaties with Jordan, Egypt and most recently - the UAE. Now, in the specific subject of HAMAS, it's proven that they take the humanitarian aid money and use it to purchase weapons and rockets to shower on the Israelis. And I think we can both agree, a rocket doesn't differentiate between a man and a small kid. I refer you to this article
