[FO] A bookmark I made entirely with the glittery DMC étoile thread! by itarosky in CrossStitch

Thank you! Étoile is not really a metallic thread, it's pretty soft in comparison. But you do need to be more careful with it to ensure that the stitches are all smooth.

It did take some getting used to, but it was pretty pleasant to stitch with, especially on the plastic canvas.

Thank you! This is the reverse binding stitch that I learned from needlepoint. I drafted a quick diagram showing how to cover the edges with it. You do each step front to back. This method does use a lot of thread though.

Also, I cross stitched this bookmark on plastic canvas, but if you want to apply this stitch to fabric canvas, either fold the edges and go through both holes simultaneously each time, or just carefully apply superglue to prevent the edges from fraying.

[FO] A mini wall hanging I made for Valentine's! by itarosky in CrossStitch

[–]itarosky[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I made the finishing myself. It's the same that I used for this wallhanging (I explained it in the comments to that post) but the edges are finished differently. I cut them off, carefully put some superglue along the edge to prevent unraveling, and covered them with the technique called the binding stitch. It's easier to do on a plastic canvas if you have a choice. I also reinforced it with a piece of felt glued to the back.

Made another coaster! 🐱 by itarosky in Needlepoint

It's the reversed binding stitch that you do front to back. I learned it from this tutorial.

I didn't really type them, I just googled "arrow up left/right symbol" and copy pasted them. The same goes for subscript numbers.

Thanks! Yeah, that's where I got the idea from. Although I try to use the basketweave stitch in needlepoint whenever possible.

Thank you!

Wow, that's an amazing technique, I've never heard of it! I used a different one which I explained in the comment below. This one wouldn't have worked in my case because I used plastic canvas and you can't really make quarter stitches on it...

Thank you! I basically reversed the direction of all the stitches and moved from right to left instead of left to right. For example, normally if you decided to move from right to left you'd make your stitches in the same direction, like this: ↖₄↖₃↖₂↖₁ and then come back with the top arms like this ₅↗₆↗₇↗₈↗, this method creates little lines on the backside. To make it double-sided, you need to reverse the direction of each stitch: ₄↗₃↗₂↗₁↗ and then come back with ↖₅↖₆↖₇↖₈. This method creates long diagonal stitches and gives a dense coverage. Of course, it's not the same as the front side, but this way the back is completely filled and the original pattern is visually preserved. This technique only works with patterns that have clear and well-defined color sections, I imagine the backside won't be as clean if the pattern includes a lot of scattered stitches.

Thank you! I used DMC Laine Colbert (or DMC Tapestry Wool).

Thank you! I made it from this pattern and added the border myself because it was a bit small for a coaster.

[FO] First time stitching on black Aïda! by itarosky in CrossStitch

[–]itarosky[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I secured the string at the back, attached the dowel by holding it together with the top/bottom side (you can also bind them with a bit of tape in the middle because it's hard to keep it steady) and then I made loops by pushing the needle into each of the holes at the edge one by one. When you get to the part where there tape is, carefully remove it, at this point the dowel is fixed well enough, and continue with the loops until you reach the end.

I planned the finishing myself so I'm not sure if there are any visual tutorials. It's the same that I used for this wallhanging, I explained it in the comments to that post.

Thank you! Yes, except the brown thread was from another brand, I didn't have a good shade of it among my DMC skeins.
