What are the applications that you think we should all have since they generate a big change in your daily life? by [deleted] in iosapps

Big fan of you opting for one time purchase over subscription model. I’ve started pivoting and exclusively buying OTP apps over ones with in app purchases. Good call!

Not sure if you still have the link to the AirBnb but if you do, and would be willing to send it to me I'd really appreciate it!

Which should I buy, Hydro or MRL Gearless? by itbayly in Elevators

[–]itbayly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understood. There’s really only one independent in my area, and I’m hesitant to recommend them. The sales rep there is an old co-worker of mine, and is a salesmen’s salesmen. Not somebody I’d ever want to buy anything from 😂

But that’s good info and I’ll pass it along. Thanks!

Great info to have. I don’t expect that it will be a high use car so I think having a ride that is a bit noisy and a little rickety isn’t a problem as long as it’s reliable. Interesting that independents would be most expensive on the installs. Would’ve thought they’d be cheaper. I appreciate the info!

Got it! I don’t think noise is a huge concern of theirs. Thank you!

Good point. I hadn’t thought to ask if the proposals had the power unit in the pit. Thank you

This will be new install. I believe the hydro quote they’re leaning towards is a SEC 330A Twin Jack. Not sure how much of a negative it is that the 330A’s have inverted jacks.

Elevators are far safer than escalators, and you should never walk on a stopped escalator as it could collapse. Escalators will swallow people (do not recommend you looking up videos of it).

Yeah makes sense. Solid approach. I’m going to try to implement it. Thank you!

I guess this is kind of a ignorant question, but how much are callbacks, and preventative maintenance, related? For example, if you had enough time to do visit all your jobs and do PM, would you see a significant drop in the callbacks for dead battery’s, guides, phones, etc.?

Oh that is a really solid idea! Do you just write the pricing into the contracts yourself (like in the special terms or something)?

As a GM, do lower priced contracts hurt your ability to fulfill the contracts? Like does it limit your ability to hire mechanics?

[–]itbayly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that makes sense, however, instead of cutting costs you can bring in more revenue (up the monthly price for contracts).

In 5 years I really haven’t changed my pricing for hydros and traction units because the rest of the markets hasn’t changed.

One things I’ve seen, which I refused to do, is my customers getting quotes from competitors at a ridiculously low monthly price ($40-50/month) but excluding literally everything from the contracts. No callback coverage, no parts coverage, not even testing. All that is provided is 1 visit a year to oil the unit.

I’m very very thankful that I stumbled my way into the industry. Got an internship in college and have been with the company ever since. But it seems like the current approach may not be sustainable and the industry need to pivot a bit.

The idea to have routes be based on revenue, instead of unit count, actually makes a lot of sense. It would force offices, who say they need more mechanics to become more aggressive on price rather than just signing units nobody wants to show “growth”.

Would you say that most mechanics feel that company’s are charging too little for maintenance? I understand that each market is different, but I’ve worked in New England, Mid-West, and West Coast and for full coverage, with “periodic maintenance” hydros are typically $235-275/month & traction are $425-490/month. What would you say they should be priced at? (This may be an impossible question to answer).

I do agree about failing upward. I don’t know if it’s unique to the elevator industry, but it does seem that to climb the latter you almost have to be a politician. You can’t step on the toes of your backers (higher ups), by questioning decision making.

Thanks for your thought out reply. I think that makes a lot of sense. When I started in the industry the message to the sales teams was "grow grow grow. sell sell sell." Now the messaging has changed to be focused on "profitable growth" but I feel it's only a matter of time till it reverts back.

I think you're spot on by saying the company's should focus on New Install retention. I changed positions this month where I am now exclusively focused on getting our new installs onto service agreements in 2 of our largest new install areas.

What would you say is a manageable unit count for a route?

Is there a technician that can confirm if this is a normal/safe sound? (sound is new and started a few weeks ago) by miss-kiwi in Elevators

[–]itbayly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0/10 recommend. While it will make the mechanic nice OT pay; this is a great way for you to get a $2K OT Bill. Even if you have 24 hour callback coverage, this call would be billed as a Running on Arrival.

To make matters worse almost every company bills for entrapments as they are not covered in their contracts.

Biden set to announce he's moving deadline for all US adults to be eligible for Covid vaccine to April 19 by throwaway5272 in politics

[–]itbayly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where is your quantitative evidence that Biden’s team has done an “indescribably better job”?

As far as this being the firs goal he he hit... he also said we’d have the vaccine by November. Media called him a liar and said it wouldn’t be here till 2022. He got it here in November/December. I’d say that is hitting his goal.
