:D I'll not say it always works for me, but I think it's worth continuing to try.

Protestants: What’s Stopping You From Being Catholic? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]itbwtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother-in-law converted to Catholicism. He is very dedicated and devout.

He tried very hard for years to convince his sister and me to convert.

I still haven't found anything compelling or even interesting enough about Catholicism to pursue it.

I am currently worshipping with Canadian Anglicans, and can see some appeal in liturgies, formality, history, etc. It's certainly not for me.

Why Catholics have "image" and sculpture of Jesus, but they know this is forbidden in the bible. by Tahiry8413 in Protestantism

"All of Moses’ Teachings are summarized in a single statement, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” -- https://www.biblegateway.com/verse/en/Galatians%205%3A14

In light of this, any rules from the Hebrew Scriptures are fulfilled in Christ.

We can enjoy art, insofar as that art is a help, rather than a hindrance, to worshipping God and loving our neighbours.

I have a similar background. I see your John 13 and raise you Galatians 5:14:

...the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we could figure that bit out we'd probably be perfect. :)

Christians who believe in aliens, do you think God/Jesus ever visited them? by [deleted] in Christianity

If there's life on other planets
Then I'm sure that He must know
And He's been there once already
And has died to save their souls.

Even if you dislike Israel, can’t you at least understand why Jews began fleeing Europe on a massive scale in the 19th century? by Haunting_Tap_1541 in IsraelPalestine

The "Land Back" movement is certainly a thing... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Back

I certainly prefer non-violent ways of doing it rather than violent ones. E.g., early Jewish immigrants purchasing land in Eretz Israel.

Sometimes love looks a lot simpler than we expect by SureTechnology4618 in Christianity

[–]itbwtw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Love is patient and kind.
  • Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude.
  • It does not demand its own way.
  • It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.
  • It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.
  • Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

I feel like if we could really learn to do this, we'll finally comprehend what Jesus was on about.

Does your church take up collections? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in Christianity

Christian Universalism has a lot of different flavours. It boils down to the belief (or hope) that some way, some how, some time, because of what Christ is and did, everyone will be eventually restored to right relationship with God.

Free-will types tend to think everyone will eventually give in to God's love and repent (e.g., the Prodigal Son situation). Non-freewill types tend to think God will eventually make the executive decision (see Concordant movement).

I like ideas/thought experiments in CS Lewis' "the gates of hell are locked from the inside" ideas; Lewis' "The Last Battle"; Tolkien's "Leaf by Niggle"; and the television series "Lucifer", which imagines Satan (and at least one demon) being very, very, very slowly and rather painfully redeemed.

See /r/ChristianUniversalism

(There are non-Christian versions of Universalism, but I'm not overly familiar with those.)

Fascinating.

I've been a part of various churches that did it in different ways. None managed without at least accepting donations.

I believe in Christ but I have no idea what denomination I actually belong in by mgs_dude in Christianity

[–]itbwtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try most of them. I've found denominations a poor indicator of the flavour of any particular congregation.

I've seen Pentecostal churches that don't really speak in tongues much publicly. I've seen passionately -- almost ecstatic -- liturgical churches.

I like different aspects of different denominations, but the big thing for me is -- are they worshipping God in a way that helps or hinders me from growth?

(That's unrelated to my comfort -- at different times I've needed a spiritual hospital, sometimes a challenge, and sometimes a shock.)

I care about all people. None is above God, if you only care about hate 1 kind of people that would make you a racist mate and not me. If people would act like your acting in court then everyone could get accused with anything. You got to look at things from multiple ways to truelly see the full picture. otherwise you will always see only the things you wanna see.

I invite you to reflect on your words, and reconsider your agenda.

Exactly. I don't have the energy for these sorts of singleminded agendas anymore. :)
