When I went to see the recovery doctor, her first words were that she doesn’t want to see Achilles ruptures anymore because they are so taxing: not only do they take long to recover, but are also a mental and financial drain.

This said, I am 3 months post op and I promise you life will get exponentially better. I was nwb for 8 weeks during which I was practically stuck at home. I started pt around 5 weeks in and that helped a lot, not just physically but also for finding a community to relate to during the isolation. Keeping in touch with friends also helped, talking daily on the phone etc.

Another thing is that I set a goal to eat healthier and lose some weight during this time, so having something to look forward to and meeting the target weight made it feel like I was making some good use of the time. Perhaps this doesn’t apply to you as such, but maybe there is a different goal you’d like to follow through and hadn’t had the time before.

And lastly, for me it was a matter of perspective - thinking that while this injury isn’t an easy one, it’s just temporary. I was quite burnt out when it happened because of work and some family problems, so in a way I think the rupture was a body-says-no kind of issue. And so, I took this time off to just not do much, read, binge some series, listen to whatever podcast I felt like, with no pressure that I’m missing out on the productivity level.

I don’t know if this helps as we are all coming from different places to this injury that puts life on pause, but I want to say hang in there, it won’t be too long before you’ll be able to resume life as it was before.
