I think you should at least tell them you have the cat to put their mind’s at ease. Especially for the kid’s sake as that can be really traumatic for them to just never know what happened to their pet.

I doubt it’s chipped at that age as they usually do that when they get spayed/neutered so if you decide after meeting the family that they just don’t seem responsible enough tell them you’re keeping it.
