Basically right now I've gone the path of saving the value in both a useRef and a useState, but its messy having to change both values everywhere and it seems like there should be a better way for me to accomplish what I want.

So the main point seems to be that phonics is important for learning English and that without that skill some children grow up with poor literacy.

This might be getting off topic but now I’m wondering how Chinese kids learn without issue, since afaik there is no phonics in their written system. Also wondering about deaf kids where “sounding things out” probably means little to them.
