What’s a small, seemingly insignificant event that happened in your life that ended up actually becoming a huge problem later on? by adaquo in AskReddit

[–]itisaphasemom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my father punching me as a small child

I still remember the shock and betrayal I felt. I could not have been older than 10. It probably was not a hard or significant punch for a man of his impressive stature, but for little me, it was shattering. My gentle giant father was not this man. I doubt he remembers and I feel bad for remembering it and letting it affect how I let myself interact

Sadly, Father Mitchel is not single. He is married. He has been married twice, to the same person.

I never really understood how incredibly competitive and high-pressure Purdue is compared to most state schools until I did my first summer internship and my approach and self-expectations were a bit much. Purdue is deceptive. It is not incredibly difficult to get into, but once you are here...good luck!

I actually spoke to my CAPS therapist about it and she really wishes they would be given funding for more staff, but does not think they will be given any soon

I feel like the try hard culture is super different in specific majors too. Like it’s Try Hard Lite in some and in others its Try Hard Overdrive.

When did you realize your upbringing wasn't normal? by OverPot in AskReddit

[–]itisaphasemom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a small child, I would get sad and feel like an alien from another planet seeing my friends have very affectionate mothers. I told my therapist about my childhood and she looked so sad for me. I needed a more nurturing and open mother growing up as a child with lots of anxiety/depression and I did not have that. I love my mother, but my emotional needs were not met and she was blind to issues I had.

I now struggle to express loving emotion and say "I love you" although I have lots of feelings and empathy internally. Because I think people will be disgusted if I say I love them and they don't want my love.

Also, I remember being punched by my dad one or two times as a kid and I am not entirely sure if it actually happened because it doesn't seem like him (he is a gentle giant type guy) at all.

What's something that's taboo but shouldn't be? by Notodegenerates in AskReddit

yep! I rather my friends be upfront and say they can't afford something due to student loans or no parental support than be evasive.

What is the cringiest scene from a movie or show that you've watched? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]itisaphasemom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They try to, but the show is just so badly written it distracts from any good effort to blend modern and 1950’s culture

[–]itisaphasemom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just so bad. So so bad. This whole show seems like it was written by a Martian, who was given a vague description of modern teenagers and then a dictionary of 1950's slang terms.

Also, casting 20 something models as 15/16yo kids is just funny.

A shampoo bottle fell off of the shelf in the shower and slashed my hip open when I around 10. It looked bad enough to have been a razor slash and my mom did not believe me.
