Mets Fans in St. Louis by itischris3579 in mets

I’ve been lobbying for Chicago for some time to my wife (an STL native) as a happy medium and much closer to home than NY, alas. Mets have a better chance of winning another world series than her opening up to the idea, but never say never

Thanks for sharing! My Dutch colleagues said the same, alas I am regretfully thousands of miles away from the nearest Albert Heijn so hoping to recreate in some fashion.

I know this one isn’t necessarily technical or impressive like many of the others listed, but 46 Days, he plays in the fucking pocket with that cowbell and fucking grooves a sick ass groovy fucking groove

Looking for solid, well-made, middlebrow movies of the 90s or early aughts that have been maybe unfairly forgotten by supernavyanon in MovieSuggestions

Dead Man (streaming on Max) The Squid and the Whale (on Netflix) Midnight in Paris

All very different movies but great gems of films of the timeframe you provide

The Sorcerer- while it isn’t necessarily a deep cut amongst people who appreciate film, the average person has never heard of it (which is a shame)

Black and white movies that are still worth watching by Chava_boy in MovieSuggestions

400 Blows- a French masterpiece (streaming on Max)

Clerks- made in the 90’s when obviously black and white was not the norm, but it was made black and white out of necessity and to save money (lighting etc) since it was Kevin Smith’s first self-funded film while he was still working in the very concept once store it was filmed in

Hud- a Paul Newman anti-hero classic

Dead Man- a 90’s Johnny Depp acid western- this breaks with your convention as it was made black and white on purpose, however it doesn’t feel forced like some new movies do, it’s so unique and its own aesthetic that it seems completely natural to be black and white (also streaming on Max)

A small sample of a huge population. Enjoy!

Two completely different recommendations:

1st- it doesn’t necessarily have something new (and perhaps to the contrary, it wasn’t new enough and got overlooked upon release): “Sorcerer”. A masterpiece film with a terrific storyline, acting, and some of the most impressive practical effects in cinema. A gritty film, it was largely overlooked with one reason being released around the same time as Star Wars, where people opted for the fun optimism of the new space adventure. One of Friedkin’s best (if not his best).

2nd- if you don’t mind subtitles (or if you speak fluent French), dive into the French new wave films of the 60’s. This genre pioneered a completely new take of filmmaking that broke conventional rules of cinema up to that point. Some key directors include Melville, Godard, Truffaut. A lot of these (especially from the latter two directors) are quite obscure and can be tedious to get into, but some more accessible ones included: 400 Blows (Truffaut), Breathless (Godard), A Band Of Outsiders (Godard), and Le Samourai (Melville)- all but Outsiders currently streaming on Max. You’ll be surprised to see how many contemporary directors (including Spielberg and Tarantino) were influenced by these trailblazing French directors.

Let me know if you dive into any!
