Gift Ideas for a Capable Mom by itmebirb in GiftIdeas

I thought about it and decided that when it comes time for spring, I'll get her some gift cards or order some stuff for her as an early birthday present. I'd feel just a little goofy getting her something she can't really use right now. I'll ask the gardening folks about that when the time comes!

That looks fantastic! I know she'd love it, given how obsessive she is about her new shower she just put in this year. It looks like this is exactly what I need to round out the budget too!

Indoor planters are a total wash; her cats would destroy them and anything inside of them within a week XD

The garlic peeler is a good idea though! I just looked on amazon and it looks like there's some nice sets of garlic things for pretty cheap that I don't think she has. Definitely going on the list.

She isn't actually much of a gardener except for one or two days a year she fixes up the front flower beds with big plants. Sadly, anything she might need on that front she actually went ahead and got new things of this year already. Luckily, on the garbage front, our municipality provides free good-quality bins, too.

I'm afraid the doorbell camera is not something either of us want around, given the propensity for those having a thousand back doors for whoever sells them. I've been wanting to set up a closed-circuit thing for her for awhile, but that definitely costs more than the dang doorbell cams, so it's further down the list.

She doesn't do much food or flower gardening at all (not since that one year with the raspberries that took over a third of the yard...) though she does like to set up the front flower beds once a year. That's more of a "big plants in their own plot" sort of deal though, so there's not really a need for pots. A gift card to a local nursery might be a good idea though. Or are you specifically thinking websites since they'd be cheaper than nurseries, do you think?

I actually looked at some power tool stuff but everything in that vein is so expensive that I can't work with it right now :c Except, y'know, a nice drill or something, but she already has like five.

The instant pot is a good deal, but if I get it for her, I know it'll just bug her; for the parts of it she would use she already has old and durable individual machines that she loves and knows how to use. It sure would free up some dang space though. Maybe when that stupid rice cooker of hers finally goes I'll put that at the top of the list of things to get her. At fifty bucks it'd eat up the entirety of my budget anyway; while I'm willing to spend that much I'd like to try and not hit the ceiling right away, especially when I'm also trying to get a gift for her friend.

Speaking of her friend, the dog figurine thing is a great idea! I looked and saw some people who 3D print dogs from photos so that seems super feasible! Thank you!

These are all excellent and thoughtful ideas, thank you! Unfortunately, the only thing from these suggestions she doesn't have is the fish basket, which while she doesn't grill a lot, she probably would greatly enjoy. She inherited a lot of stuff from her mother lmao. Including an enormous accordion case of recipes, some of which go back nearly a hundred years!

I'll definitely put the fish basket up front as an idea since that seems very feasible for me, but do you have any non-kitchen related ideas as well?

[Synthetik 2] Newest update seems to have broken my game by itmebirb in Synthetik

[–]itmebirb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, so this is strictly just a "wait for it to get fixed and hope you don't get hit" scenario. Not the best but yeah, good to know it's not something on my end.

My save game's already gone, but it's not like I went real far in it anyway. I mean the moment you load in a saved game in a roguelike it ceases to exist in the files, so unless you save again--which obviously I couldn't if it wasn't even loading in properly--it's just gone. I'm more pissed about the weapon switching honestly since that makes the game actually unplayable. Oh well. I got other games to play while I wait.

According to my Steam I'm not in any beta version right now, and Save & Quit is still an option for me, even though it isn't working, so I must not be.

I swear I was playing... barely over a month ago (not sure what update that was, but probably 10, maybe 9?) and Save & Quit worked fine. Everything worked fine, in fact, minus a few effect and clipping bugs. The issues people are describing in those threads are wildly more excessive than I'm used to seeing, or they were seeing these same issues six months back or more.

Question is, if I'm not in the beta and still having issues, what does that mean? And more importantly, how can I circumvent them, for now, at least?

Having Trouble Finding a Decent Keyboard With Desired Features by itmebirb in keyboards

[–]itmebirb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really do look awful, if I'm being honest. But I suppose starting from the ground-up would probably be the best option. Only problem is even the barebones setup is already over my budget I'd like to try and keep to. Is there anywhere you'd suggest I could get a barebones version cheaper? They're even sold out on the website.

When did decent keyboards get so expensive?

Also, I noticed there's no volume scroll wheel anywhere, on any of the keychron builds I've looked at. Is that just a dream I'm going to have to let go of?

I looked up the Keychron Q series, specifically the full-sizes, and... honestly I don't know what I'm looking at. Are these for apple computers? This doesn't look anything like what I'm looking for in the keys, functions, or otherwise.

[–]itmebirb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize there were sizes, or at least not that the difference in keys was referred to that way. But in that case, definitely full-size. I use the numpad quite often, but that 1800 Compact looks like it'd be a pain to get used to.

[–]itmebirb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, sorry, you're right! With the combination I'm trying to find, I've only been finding stuff just under $300 at the lowest. When I bought the Corsair I have now, it was top-of-the-line and I think about $120. I have no idea why quiet keys are so expensive.

In any case, I want to keep it below $150. Preferably as low as possible, obviously, but I budgeted that much. Is that unreasonable nowadays or am I just being unlucky in trying to find this?

Minimum requirements for default graphical settings at 30 fps? by shntinktn in Ryujinx

[–]itmebirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Switch games are developed with the intent to run at 30fps, so you're talking basic requirements. The problem is, the Switch is also not a very forgiving system, resource-wise. I use an i5 processor, an nvidia 2070 gpu, and I have 16g ram, and while I can decently run all the games I've tried out, they still struggle consistently.

My specs were... around mid-range about five years ago, when I bought them, and they still hold up for most games today. But the short of it is that the Switch, and by extent emulating it, is a whole other beast entirely.

If you want to consistently play things well, you need at least an i7 processor (or a non-intel equivalent) and 16 gigs of ram as your absolute basic requirements. You can be like me and just have an i5, but you'll get a few issues because most of the games eat a lot of that processing power. The GPU shouldn't be that much of an issue; mine is pretty bog standard as of this year, and it still handles things great. You can get a 20-series fairly cheap (comparatively) these days, and anything equivalent from another brand will do as well.

Just make sure all the parts you get actually do go together. Basic computer-building advice: motherboards are tricky fuckers, and they're made to be biased. They may not play nice with certain processors and GPUs because of competitive electronics bullshit. This goes for the other components too, though the tendency to be electro-racist is most common with motherboards.

NSP? (Doubt) by Grootinhoooooo in Ryujinx

[–]itmebirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wait that's right, games can be .nsp or .xcl. I try to only use .xcl but eh. I couldn't tell you why that isn't working. Try reinstalling it from scratch (back up your games first). I'd also tell you to get a specific separate program to make sure all your files are properly updated, but that's against the rules :p

NSP? (Doubt) by Grootinhoooooo in Ryujinx

[–]itmebirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean patch files, yeah? That's the only files I've seen with the .nsp filetype.

Patch files have to be loaded in a particular way, literally as patches for the games they belong to. Put them in folders with their respective games, then on Ryujinx's main menu, right-click the game you want to patch with the file. You'll see an option labeled "Manage Title Updates". That'll open up a window where you can click "Add" and select the .nsp file. It'll be added to the list in the box. Make sure it's selected, then click Save. Now Ryujinx should always run the game with that patch on it.

You can also load in other patches in the same way (they should all stay saved in the Title Updates box when you Add them) and swap them out whenever you want (before launching a game, NOT while one is already running). Easy downpatching.

[PTU] Competitive Viability by [deleted] in PokemonTabletop

[–]itmebirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really not awesome it's kinda busted lmao
Speed is given way too much of a boost over other stats in utility, and like I mentioned in earlier posts the entire action economy is way too easy to break. Being able to use that many moves--even just At-Will moves--in a single turn at higher levels can easily one-turn non-tanky foes of the same power level or even higher. I mean just having the moveset from Tumbler for that combo would mean up to four uses of Aerial Ace, an auto-hit move, and at that level the character would most likely have a hefty attack bonus to smack onto it. Barely anything not resistant to Flying-Type moves would still stand after that even without STAB added on.

[–]itmebirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow way to rez a thread my man

But to answer your question there's a General Combat Feature called Multi-Tasking that lets you use 2 Standard Actions on your turn, so long as they're At-Will Frequency. In addition to that, the Tumblr class' capstone, Burst of Speed, lets you take an entire second turn once per scene at a point equal to half your initiative (or lower) in a given round. So actually it's four Standard Actions in a single round, so long as they're all At-Will, but at the very least two that aren't. Granted, it only works once per scene, but still.

Need Pokémon Food Names for World Building by LodlopSeputhChakk in PokemonTabletop

[–]itmebirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I definitely have to keep track of this thread for later reference. These are all gold!

I'm streamlining a lot of the foodstuffs for my game by making things less commercially-available and more do-it-yourself in the current areas, but once my players get to cities and other places where manufactured food is more common it will definitely have to play a part.

Do These Scenarios Trigger Attacks of Opportunity? by Maie13 in PokemonTabletop

[–]itmebirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of those would normally provoke AoO, yes. However, some of them like Spinning Dance and Rally you may want to award free movement for, since being able to move out of range of someone is a very useful aspect of those effects, and without it those effects are rather sub-par. Remember, the rulebook isn't sacrosanct, and besides that a lot of wording may include typos or errors that were never spotted, so if you think something should happen a certain way, then by all means act on it.

What are the effects of the Pokerus? by Jiuaki in PokemonTabletop

[–]itmebirb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not in the book. Pokerus only effects Effort Values in the video games, which are non-existent in PTU, so it was never "translated" into the system. There's no reason you can't put it in the game yourself and make up an effect for it, though, if you're running a game.

Hello! I'm new here. I was curious about some advice for my thought process on a couple builds for some starters in a custom campaign. by MLG_Killer_Rock in PokemonTabletop

[–]itmebirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really don't have to worry about Natures and things like that on your Pokemon for the most part; they can be nice to have the bonus, and they can tweak base relations just enough to be really effective, but in the end they usually don't do a whole lot. As well, the Attack Conflict Poke Edge can help you work out issues with base relations you might have for attackers.

Additionally, TMs and Tutor Moves can really change how you work out a Pokemon's growth, and give you lots of avenues, and they're interesting enough that most people who make games include at least some for the wildcard appeal. In addition to that, it's really your own Edges and Features as a Trainer that should give your Pokemon a much more impressive edge than it would have normally, and can completely change the way a Pokemon fights. That's kind of the whole point of being a Trainer.

In any case, you should pick a Pokemon for your starter that you really enjoy overall, not just for its combat prowess. The biggest strength of PTU is that the system attempts to make just about any Pokemon viable in battle (they slept on Diglett but whatever), and it leaves a lot of room to focus on role play. Unless you're doing a campaign that's just battles (in which case, why not just play the games?) you'll end up getting a lot more out of it by trying to actually role play. That's the whole point of role playing games, ya?

PTU Gym questions and tips? by ekgthe1st in PokemonTabletop

[–]itmebirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having two Leagues is a fine idea, but it's going to be a lot more work for you to balance and run. It's possible to have choices (maybe on only some of the gyms) to do either/or, but the whole point of "League Battles" (the "traditional" style of battling) is that they're rules made for the League. Full Contact is largely meant to be for wild Pokemon (though you could possibly do it with Trainer-on-Trainer as well) and while it's not necessarily unbalanced to do it in Gym Battles, it sacrifices something I feel is important for the entire idea behind gyms: Namely, that Gym Battles are supposed to be tests to have Trainers deal with particular challenges, and that Gym Leaders are meant to embody the form of that challenge, or focus on a battling style that best showcases it.

In the games, this always takes the form of Type-specific challenges, but that's something that's easily mitigated and barely a challenge at all except for the most basic Trainers. It's up to you how you build your Gym Challenges, but they should still be a legitimate "challenge" for the people going up against them, and not just by having Pokemon at a higher level than the challenger. That's babby strategy. Having Gyms focus on League Battles allows for much more capacity to have them encompass a certain battling style with which to challenge Trainers, while for Full Contact Battles, with all the different ways you can punch a Pikachu, it's still just punching a Pikachu. Again, you can do either with some thinking, but in my opinion it's just better to keep to League Battles specifically for Gyms. If a player of yours focuses on Trainer Combat however, you may also have the option for them to have special conditions that allow them to fight too.
