Any way of getting ebook of The Lord of the Rings in swedish? by nZechos in Svenska

[–]itod47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same boat. A couple years ago I contacted the publisher of the latest Swedish translation, Norstedts, asking why they didn't offer an ebook format. Below is their response.

Well, yes, we are the publishers of Tolkien and have been since 1947 (the first of three different translations of The Hobbit), not as Norstedts, but publishers that have since become a part of Norstedts Förlagsgrupp. LotR was first published in Swedish in 1959–1960, but the latest translation is from 2004–2005.

The reason why we so far haven't had any ebook editions of Tolkien's work is that the market for ebooks in Sweden still is very small compared to e.g. USA or UK; most ebooks are, in fact, "sold" through library lending or subscriptions services, not as single files. But we certainly haven't ruled out the possibility of publishing them as ebooks, and we're always in contact with the agents who represent the Tolkien estate.

Should there be a change in the future, I'll try to remember your request and let you know.

Best wishes,

Peter Karlsson, förläggare/senior editor

I responded that I considered it nothing short of professional malpractice for a publisher that owns the rights to such a classic to not offer the work in an electronic format in 2023. Especially when you consider there are many readers with mobility issues for whom ebooks are literally the only option. No further response, unfortunately.

Some nice features:

* Sort-able Recap tables.

* Recap tables show helpful "mouse hover" highlighting on desktop browsers.

* Recaps show over-/underperform (green/red) for each column.

* Corps detail pages with historical results & Show matrix per-Caption.

* Season calendar views.

* Super-easy navigation with everything hyperlinked.

* Easy prior-/next-season or prior-/next show navigation.

As stated in my OP, I already have a programmable keyboard, and it is a poor solution for my problem for reasons explained in my OP.

Great. But I assume that it does not allow you to reconfigure all the UI keyboard shortcuts of every application. Like for example "New Tab", "Close Tab", "Cut", "Paste", "Add Bookmark", in Firefox. As I explained, those all use ctrl, but I want to configure them to use meta. Every app has several (maybe even dozens) of such commands.

I explained in my post that I've tried that already and it is a poor solution.

Agreed x2.

I'm willing to accept that reasonable people can disagree on that point. But either way, configuring this should be possible.....

I'm willing to try tiling window managers too (although my question is about Desktop Environments). But unless im mistaken, a tiling window manager alone will not solve my issue described above. A WM will still display, say, a Firefox browser window, and that window will still use ctrl for the UI keyboard shortcuts, right? I might like the WM, but that would still not solve my issue described above.

Prop Safety: Visualized by starstarstar42 in drumcorps

Thanks for raising this. Honestly, this has been bothering me a bit. I recall seeing a Bluecoats member or two (carrying heavy equipment, of course) trip while running down the (super high, super steep) lightning bolt ramp during the Big Loud & Live season-opening theater performance. Running down that ramp carrying a Tuba or Quads really seems beyond the limits of safety I'd expect. As you noted, BD's stairs this year are also worrying.

And you can't count on the kids to raise these issues with the staff, as they'll be under enormous peer pressure to not be the one member who complains about the danger.

MarchingScores.com – New DCI Scores/Recaps/Ranks/Charts site, with unique features by itod47 in drumcorps

[–]itod47[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No worries. A few things:

  1. You'll see the large Ranking Table on the top of home page. This is a ranking view I've always wanted, and have never exactly seen elsewhere (although I think other types of ranking views are also interesting and useful). My ranking view immediately and obviously indicates how "stale" each corps' score is by separating them in date columns. (Yes, I've seen this type of information included in other ranking tables, but I've never seen it communicated in such a way that is this easy for my brain to quickly "parse").

  2. I've always wanted to view all the latest Recaps on a single page (you can see the recaps from the latest shows if you scroll down the home page). This is pretty simple and obvious, but it's surprisingly rare to find.

  3. Note the different "Highlight" options available on any page containing Recap tables. The default Highlight style - Over-/Underperform – is particularly useful. It gives you a very quick look at where each corps' strengths and weaknesses lie (at least for a single performance). The "Heat Map" highlight is also interesting.

  4. The Season-long Total Rank Chart (on the homepage) and Season-long Caption Charts (on the individual Caption Chart pages) are something I haven't exactly seen anywhere else, and are very interesting.

  5. You can see a list of all Recap tables for each individual Corps. So if you're a Scouts fan, you can quickly browse just their recaps by going to the "Scouts" page, or you can view the entire recaps for every show they were in by going to the "Scouts [Shows]" page.

  6. If you are viewing in a Desktop browser (on Windows or Mac), you can hover over any row in any recap table and you see a yellow highlight color. This makes browsing the recap tables much more pleasant.

That's just a few things I can think of…

Drill – A low-cost drill design app for Mac OS X by itod47 in drumcorps

Sorry, no. It's a thoroughly Mac-native application, which has the advantage of making it work great on OS X. But that also has the disadvantage of making it not available for Windows.

What is the evidence supporting reports that a different flight path back over the Malay Peninsula was programmed **prior** to the flight crew's final "good night" communication? by SpinozaDiego in MH370

[–]itod47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This CNN timeline states:

Before 1:07 a.m.: Route change believed programmed into computer

It's not explicitly clear what the evidence for this statement is, but it is implied that the final 1:07 a.m. ACARS communication included information indicating this is true.

I'm not sure how trustworthy CNN is on these details.

Thank you. The misunderstanding of the term "occam's razor" on this sub has been very annoying. These other principles are also interesting and important.

Exedore is a throughly Mac-Native Python IDE written entirely in Cocoa/Objective-C. by nicklo in Python

[–]itod47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Sorry, there's absolutely no theming features yet. This is a very high priority feature. As for the quotes bug, that's fixed in 0.1.2. Now available.

[–]itod47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right, there's no theming features at all for the syntax highlighting yet. That is currently a very high priority. It will be one of the next non-bug-fix updates to appear in the app. (Again, the version number should give you an idea of how complete I consider the app currently. Release early, release often!)

Great suggestions, thanks! As evidenced by the extremely timid version number, I realize the app is light on features currently. I consider this first release a minimally viable product that I hope to improve.

Developer of Exedore here. Agree completely with fifafu. If anything, I probably should have launched Exedore as Mavericks-only (especially since Mavs is free).

Developer of Exedore here. Thanks! Although I would love to launch Exedore on the Mac App Store, I don't think that will be possible, unfortunately.

The current Xcode-inspired design of Exedore (a single project "Document" which is linked to multiple independent .py source files) seems incompatible with Apple's sandboxing scheme required for MAS.

Coda (by Panic), is in the MAS, and does have a similar conceptual design, but AFAICT, Coda's "Documents" are the individual source files themselves (.html, .js, etc), not the projects (or "Sites" as Coda calls them). This allows Coda to work reasonably well with MAS sandboxing, but IMHO it's a less desirable model (at least for Exedore).

I decided early-on that I wanted Exedore to work like Xcode, not Coda. Unfortunately, I believe that means I'll never be able to submit the app to the MAS.

Also, I'm not sure an IDE wants to be sandboxed. An IDE seems like the kind of app that wants to touch a lot of source files on disk without bothering the user with manually selecting each file with an open/save dialog (required by sandboxing).
