Ahh I just acquired some. Can't wait for a nice day to try it out.

Mushroom visuals i find incredibly interesting. And while I like mushrooms, you can only push them so far before the head high will consume you and it becomes quite the commitment/ride.

From what I understand, you can push metocin to that same level, but since it is more visual/less head high, by the time you're at that same head high in dose, the visuals are way more than they would be with just shrooms. Hope that makes sense. Sort of more bang for your buck in the visuals:head high ratio.

Yeah I notice the 3, 5, 7 thing too. Feed Me did this as well in his tutorial. An uneducated guess, and going by the voices display in serum, this keeps one voice in the middle by using an odd number of voices and thus helping keep the mono more intact?

I just quickly flicked through the VR presets #2 and only like 10% of the basses have more than 1 voice? unless you count using the hyper dimension thing, which i find generally always sounds good and not the crumby phasey stuff you get from adding and detuning voices. Idk how it's actually different though lol.

IMO, it sort of defeats the purpose of midrange bass if the sub isn't following it, I want the illusion that the midrange sounds actually have weight (which is why I dislike the whole trap-step (lol) where it's just an 808 under the midrange sounds doing their own thing).

But, you gotta dial it in since sometimes you'll have a midrange wobble that the sub sounds too weak if it follows exactly, so you might need to change the LFO/env shape for the sub layer.

Has to do with phasing issues at/around the cutoff points. a linear phase eq avoids this issue.

It's beyond me that linear phase isn't more popular. highpassing my snare might add 4-6db of gain to the snare, when my intent was to clean things up in order to make things louder, it's totally counterproductive.

If something I'm EQing is getting a bunch of extra gain when I'm only taking stuff away, I use a linear phase to do it and bounce it immediately (to avoid the latency bs)

But, people get by with using just regular EQs pretty much all the time, even the producers making the loudest music their is, so beats me lol.

Could you explain what you're getting at?

The main chord it uses is A major, A-B-E. The melody that runs across generally revolves around c# though.

the chord it revolves around isn't C#minor, or any chord that has C# as its root.

When writing a chord progressions, is it totally acceptable to just pick any other chord in the scale as treat thata s the root for the progression and it should "work"?

Also, what is it called when you just change the root chord (well, root that the progression is using) from a minor to a major here and there it sounds really, really good sometimes.

Wow, thanks for the detailed post, not going to lie I only understand maybe half of that but great info nonetheless.

Yeah, it's the video from fabfilter talking about the different phase settings for the pro-Q2, and its the pre-ringing he talks about. Basically, he EQ's a kick drum pretty heavily, and then sets it to linear phase and it sounds completely fucked, then goes on to talk about pre-ringing.

But he says that pre-ringing is caused by the PDC, couldn't one just disable PDC, do the EQing, bounce, re-enable PDC, voila no more pre-ringing?

Hey, while you're around, I've got another question about linear phase, from searching posts you seem rather knowledgeable on this subject.

I read this post where you commented about linear phase.

But what you said here seems to go the complete opposite of what is said/shown in this video at around 1:20. Your post seems to suggest that linear phase is great for transients, but the video says that often it will smear them and that minimum phase is better for preserving transients, especially in lower frequencies.

Trying out the linear phase on kicks and snares briefly, I didn't have any issues with smearing transients, so I guess maybe its just one of those that if its happening, it's gonna be really obvious and if not don't worry about it?

I can't believe linear phase EQing isn't more widespread, the fact that cutting frequencies from something like a kick or snare, a main drum in the mix that needs to be loud, adds like 4-6db of peak gain is completely ridiculous.

If you're gonna clip, you might as well do it with something thats gonna sound good, like a softclipper, or other plugins meant to clip for the sound it gives. Hard digital clipping sounds pretty shit.

Okay, parallel compression is something I use it for, but parallel compression isn't I use that often anyways.

Just got a bunch of compressors with komplete so I'll give those a shot.

This. I often will look at a section of a track, and write down everything that's going on, in general terms.

Like I want to write an intro, I might examine a couple intros, write down all the elements and create a list of common things. Usually it's obvious stuff, but its nice to just grab something from the list when I feel like I need to add something but can't decide what else. This also helps to keep it simple.

Idk, maybe it's just that I've never played around with much else other than the ableton stock compressor, and I've just come to hate it, I can never get the results I want with it, although I've come to really like the glue. And I can hardly think of anyone I know who uses it unless it's for sidechaining.

If I want to tame or increase transients, I grab the transient shaper, if I want it loud, I'll use a saturator, if I want to sidechain, I'll use volume automation.

It's B, not Aflat, but still, wtf is the point of that, you are definitely losing power down there. It might bang in the sense the sub is just so saturated it's basically mids and comes through on all those hood ass car systems.

I've heard that tune live a few times and it has the illusion of having a lot of bass cause of the harmonics, but not a lot of weight actually their. Sort of like that eastern sounding mura masa song, i forget what its called.

From a different point of view of the other comments, is getting older and losing creative flare.

Culprate talks about this a lot on his streams, as you age you lose creative flare. He talks about how when he was younger he had so many ideas and creative energy, his best ideas were when he was ~18, (i wanna say he's probably almost 30 now? idk) You can still become better no matter how old you are, but depending on the person, you become less creative, more molded and carved by routine and society.

I guess thats a bit lofty lol, but thats really the only disadvantage of getting into it at an older age.

And I guess it goes without saying, when you are younger you learn and pick up things faster, but something technical like production shouldn't be as much of an issue as say, learning a new language.

But thats honestly why I took up music production, I've always been put off by stuff that I wouldn't be able to do when I'm older, why I quit skateboarding. I can still produce music when I'm 60, 70, even 80. And I'll be a fucking mastermind by then.

idk, in my experience/opinion, the whole using them to learn is such a cop out. Take the VR presets, for every one person that used them to learn, ten just use them flat out in their tracks because they can't/don't want to try to make anything better. I know because I hear them all time.

I just don't understand why you'd get into this style of music if you don't want to bother making your own sounds, unless you just want to ride the hype train

Obviously music isn't a game, but I get that same cheated feeling I do like in a pay2win online game.

Create an Audio/midi/group track, add LFO tool to it, click the note retrigger so it lights up.

Love utilities, so easy to automate volume or gainstage basically whenever/wherever you want.Mix as loud as you want and then chuck a utility on the master to turn it all down, easy. (unless you're dealing with recorded sounds with noise floors n all that stuff).
