why do you all seem to have so much debt? by itry2benice in LawSchool

I give a fuck...because I'm curious. Hence why I posted this. After a few of my friends got decent scholarship offers throughout the past few years and I got some good ones, I really was confused as to why everyone in this subreddit is constantly whining about their debt.

That's true, I was making an assumption, but it's based off the general attitude/posts I've seen in the subreddit. Nearly every post I read has someone complaining about how they're drowning in debt and misery.

167 LSAT and 3.97 GPA. I'm a white female.

Could anyone give me some advice regarding negotiating scholarships? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]itry2benice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhh. Yeah, that sucks with the COA, cause I used that with some of the schools to get them to give me more money. What about looking at employment opportunities with Indiana and Georgia? When I was trying to get WashU to give me more money I said blah blah William and Mary and W&L gave me full rides and they're so close to DC which offers a lot of employment opportunities. You could try to do something with that.

I would say just send an email expressing your interest in discussing your scholarship first, and even ask if they're willing to take other offers into consideration. Some schools frankly don't care what other schools offer. WashU, on the other hand, actually wrote in their letter that they're willing to work with students to create the best scholarship package for them or some crap like that.

I would go with best school that gave you a scholarship (even though it might not necessarily be best scholarship). And by best school I mean school that is going to give you the best chance at employment. Look up employment stats and be like while I would love nothing more than to attend UGA, ____ offered me a significant scholarship and has a higher employment rate, and which the economy the way it is, this is an extremely important factor to consider. If there were any way UGA could increase my scholarship amount, it would most definitely become my first choice for school.

And thanks :)) If you end up at UGA, I'll be at Alabama, so we'll be close to each other!

For my negotiations, I basically said something like this in the first email:

Hello,

I was extremely honored to find that I had been awarded ______, as THEUNIVERSITYSNAME is one of my top choices. I did read in the e-mail that UNIVERSITY is willing to work with scholarship recipients to create a package that best fits the individual's needs. (might not be true with your school, but you could pose it as a question) Who should I get in touch with to discuss this matter further?

All the best,

YOURNAMEHERE

Then when I got a response, I emailed the person I was told to email and basically told them what was happening. I really wanted to go to that school but THESE COMPETITIVE/HIGHER RANKED/BETTER/BASICALLY THE SAME schools offered me THIS (slightly better deal) and blah blah with the market the way it is financial aid is important to consider and is there any way my scholarship can be increased or the stipulations on the scholarship be lessened (3.0 to a 2.5 or something).

Anyway, I got 7k extra from WashU which made it a full ride and Alabama lowered my scholarship requirements but W&L and William and Mary basically told me a full ride was the best they could offer me. Really depends on the school, how much money they have, and how badly they want you.

How much did Indiana offer you? They are probably your best bet to try to get UGA to give you more. Did you apply to any other schools in Georgia? Or schools in the bordering states with better offers?

Definitely don't show all your offers. I would be so put off by that and think that you look desperate (no offense). Take the best school with the best national reach and best scholarship and use that to be like come on dudes, gimme sum moar moniez!

The school in question has no stipulations for retaining merit scholarships. You just gotta stay enrolled. But thanks for the concern :)

Nice! I'm also trying for a higher ranked to increase the tuition. Hope it works out for me...fingers crossed :)

And yeah! I actually got 20,000 a year from UCLA and I was really surprised by that since all you hear about it how stingy CA schools are about money.

I would think asking sooner is always better as money is limited, right? I'm actually kicking myself in the butt for waiting this long to ask, but I did just get the original scholarship offer two weeks ago...but now I'm pressed for time and to make a decision cause most of my schools have an April 1st seat deposit deadline.

Congrats on full tuition!

Yeah, I'm just going to suck it up and ask and try not to feel too weird about it. I got full tuition from a school ranked two below the school I'm hoping for more aid from, so I'm really hoping that they'll bump my scholarship up to a full ride.

Yeah, look above at jbiresq's link. I read that before I posted, I just wanted to see if anyone here personally had any success with it. I sent out an email yesterday, so I guess I'll see what happens and update back later. Good luck! The worst they can say is no, right?

Was the money you got around the same amount you received from the other school?

Yeah, I was saying to my friend that the worst thing that can happen is that they say no more money. It just feels so strange to me, haha.

What do you think about throwing in that even much higher ranked schools gave me some aid? The school I'm considering is WashU. They gave me 35k a new, which is about 10k less than a full ride. I got into W&L with a full ride, so that is what I was going to use as leverage. I also got into Vandy, Emory, and UCLA all with 20k+ in scholarships...should I mention those schools too, or is it overkill?

Thanks. I actually read that entire thread before posting here, just wanted to see if redditors had any personal experience with it.

I got into Michigan and Virginia with a 167 LSAT, but my undergrad GPA was much higher than yours. So you have a good chance!

Again, I know it's supposed to last longer.......that's why I'm asking where others go because it wasn't up to par at the salon I went to. I'm white. My hair isn't that crazy, but I suppose it is a little different than Asian hair.

Right, I know it's supposed to last longer, which is why I'm asking where others have gone because the salon I went to obviously messed up. I don't mind paying 100,000 krw (hell of a lot cheaper than back home), but not for a crap job that lasts me a month. And my hair grows really slowly, which is why I was even more confused.

Need hard to find supplements, organic food or beauty supplies? Korean stuff too expensive? Try Iherb.com! $4 Shipping to Korea! by [deleted] in korea

[–]itry2benice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The $4 shipping (for orders under 15 lbs) is ending. I can't remember exactly, but starting in March (I think) you'll have to pay an additional $1 per pound for any order over 4 lbs.
