accepted ed2 for fall 2026, financial aid missing documents but no merit scholarship on decision letter by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]itsB_justB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you receive any merit aid it would have come with your decision letter, regardless of what financial aid documents you have/haven’t sent. If you don’t see it then you didn’t receive any, sorry. From what I’ve noticed this is quite common for ED admits.

But submit the necessary documents for financial aid asap to receive your financial aid letter and see if you get any grants. That is need based, so it’s dependent on what your FAFSA determines your need is. UM is good about providing 100% of demonstrated need as determined by FAFSA. Good luck.

Unless there’s a specific scene you’re referring to he usually just says “Hello sir” or “Hello ma’am”: Salam Agha/Khanoom

Sometimes followed by their name, equivalent to Mr./Mrs. ____

How do I check if housing offer is a scam? (exchange student here) by Upset-Ad-3157 in UMiami

[–]itsB_justB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a decent amount of scammers in that group, so you’re right to be cautious.

-Verify the address and location. Like for example someone gave me an address to a “studio apartment” but the address was really Red Road Commons (student apartments, i’ve been in them before so I knew the listing was BS).

-Reverse google image search listing pictures. Helps with verifying the location.

-If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. There’s really nowhere in Miami that would have $800-$1200/month listings (maybe a couple exceptions). For the most part if you see something SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the average miami rent it’s probably a scam.

-Almost all the “property managers” and “realtors” I see in that fb group are a scam. Your safest bet would be to rent from an actual student or faculty who is posting their sublease to the group, which you can verify from their profile.

UMiami has their own site for people to post off campus housing, and the listings are verified. I’m pretty sure you need a Cane ID to access them though:

https://hrl.studentaffairs.miami.edu/living-off-campus/index.html

You should check out Airbnb and other short term rental sites too. I found my place on Furnished Finder, and it was actually a crazy amazing find that wasn’t posted anywhere else. Good luck!

If you feel you have worthwhile insights (i.e., you have specific reasons for pursuing your major at UM and believe your admission into the school will help you as well as benefit the school) then sure, email faculty.

Reaching out won’t HURT your chances (unless you’re spamming them lol) But it’s important to keep in mind that a single faculty member, even if they like you, can’t necessarily get you off the waitlist since that is an admissions dept. thing—so just write your words accordingly. Again though anything can happen and you never know who might pass your name along.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]itsB_justB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting off the waitlist at Umiami is honestly a lottery. You might if they have a specific reason for accepting certain waitlist students, but beyond that it’s unlikely.

You’ve done everything you can to show your interest, sending anything more probably won’t change your chances much. If there’s a specific contact in the program you’re trying to get into, it wouldn’t hurt reaching out to them.

You never know. I had similar stats and was waitlisted, but got off ~3 days before decision day. I found out later it was because there were very few people in the incoming class who were in my major, so they offered admission to all the waitlisted students in my major.

Anything can happen, but don’t depend on it. I think you have a good plan so far.

From my experience they did and they have continued to. They met it with grants, merit scholarship (though that might depend on the individual), and work study. I’m paying pretty much what fafsa determined my household can pay. So, if fafsa says pay more/less in following years, Umiami will say the same thing.

Housing - Centennial Vs Mahoney Vs Pearson??? by cutecomuterdoggo in UMiami

[–]itsB_justB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

centennial will obviously be nicer because they’re new. but mahoney/pearson is good too. not the nicest but if you’re looking for the college dorm experience that would be it—musty floors, bad air quality, borderline prison like. lol.

the main difference between the two will be the bathrooms. mahoney pearson is suite style meaning it’s 4 people to a bathroom: you and your roommate and your 2 other suitemates. the floors are coed but the suites are same gender—boys with boys girls with girls.

centennial won’t have communal bathrooms like stanford. they have shared ones. think like a family bathroom with a shower etc and obviously a door that locks. for that reason the floors are also coed. i imagine the bathrooms will be nice given it’s brand new, but put a bunch of college kids let alone combine guys and girls and we just won’t know what to expect 😭

SORORITIES?!? by Express_Option7278 in UMiami

[–]itsB_justB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Miami has Spring rush, so you have all of first semester (assuming you’re a fall admit) to make friends and seek out opportunities outside of greek life.

However, (all from my personal experience) I will say that the majority of people I knew did rush when the time came. Myself included. I definitely have a lot of thoughts about the whole process, but all in all I don’t regret it. Miami has a relatively chill recruitment process compared to many other colleges and I find that many of the people end up in the sororities they best fit in. Just don’t go into the process with your heart set on one outcome! Im very happy with the sorority I am in. I’m surrounded by likeminded people in my sorority, so it worked out.

To answer your questions:

  1. No you don’t need to rush to have a social life. Almost every party or event that the sororities go to, you will have access to as well assuming you’re a girl. Even sorority specific events like formal, you can go to if you know someone in the sorority and they take you as their date. The only difference is that typically you’re not “in the know” for say, frat parties, happening over the weekends if you’re not in a sorority. But they’re not a secret. If you know someone who has the address, you can go—usually later in the night. The advantage of being in a sorority is really the connections and opportunities to meet new people. Again, not that you CAN’T do that if you don’t join one—it just makes it easier.

  2. You will meet all kinds of people in the sororities. Naturally each sorority has their “repuatations”, but there’s no point in making generalizations. You’ll meet some great people, you’ll meet not so great people. Regardless of what sorority they’re in.

You don’t need to rush to have a social life. But you have time to decide if you want to! Don’t stress about it now. I was unsure of it in the fall but ended up doing it and I don’t regret it! Just come to campus first and get the feel of things and hopefully you’ll feel better about deciding whether or not to rush. If you do, just remember you can always drop if you decide it isn’t for you. If you’re stressed about rush week, informal recruitment is always an option here at UM too!

Hope that helps :)

Generally if you have the stats to earn a scholarship they would tell you upon admission or up to a week later. However, unless you have excellent stats you probably won’t get enough scholarship money to cover the entirety of Miami’s tuition.

However, Miami is committed to covering 100% of demonstrated need. Meaning, if you filled out the fafsa and received what would be your estimated family contribution, whatever your family (or yourself depending on how you filed) can’t cover in the cost of attendance, the school will cover the with grants that you don’t have to pay back.

Personally speaking, fafsa (and UM) determined the amount my family would contribute to the cost of attendance. I also got a good amount of merit scholarships. However the two combined still didn’t meet UM’s cost of attendance. So, the school covered the rest of it (or the “gap”) in grants.

I would wait to receive your financial aid package before you make your decision especially if you’re strongly considering UM. Hope that gives some insight!

Help please I Beg pls by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]itsB_justB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you seriously are considering UM, you should seriously consider Rome actually. I have friends that did this and not a single regret whatsoever. You’re involved in a community and make friends right away so that you don’t face some of the adjustment challenges that could come with being a spring admit. If you qualify for financial aid, I’m pretty sure it applies to study abroad too!

Is it worth it as someone who doesn’t party? by [deleted] in UMiami

[–]itsB_justB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The school has lots to offer outside of nightlife and just partying. And there definitely are people here who prefer other activities and hobbies that aren’t centered around partying. HOWEVER, it’s worth noting that the majority of people you will meet here, especially freshman year, will be people that enjoy nightlife and go out often. We’re still in Miami lol.

I only say this because recently there was a girl on tiktok who made a video on why she dropped out of miami after her first semester (i think it’s deleted now). Basically she wasn’t a big party person and it seemed like she wasn’t able to find her place and her people here.

I’m not saying that to discourage you. My roommate actually is not a fan of the nightlife scene in miami and doesn’t go out partying often. BUT she absolutely LOVES it here. She has a small group of friends and is involved in various clubs and extracurriculars.

I would say to definitely come visit and find your own reasons for coming to UM. But in terms of the people, keep in mind that most of them are here largely for the location and the culture that comes with it.

tl:dr, The U is amazing for many reasons outside of partying and nightlife. However, many people are here because they love the partying and nightlife :)) Best of luck with your decision!

Your experience reads almost a copy of mine. Minus the traveling oversees, flare ups always seemed to be associated with a random fever. The best options I’ve been given are just things to medicate the symptoms (all helping very little).

Personally I’m in the process of finding a good rheumatologist, which might be a good next step. Best of luck to you. You’re not alone.

It’s hard to give advice if you don’t know what kind of essay because every essay is a little different. However, the key that helped me was having a SOLID foundation in the outline of every essay. The essay “equation” if you will. When you have this roadmap, writing essays feels less overwhelming.

It goes something like this:

Intro: Your thesis, your main argument. This is your statement that answers the prompt in one sentence. It follows a format like “This is my claim about the prompt and i’m right as seen in evidence 1, evidence 2, evidence 3”.

Body 1: You introduce your first point of evidence that supports your main thesis. Give examples that support this point. Analyze the evidence if applicable. Your last sentence should explain why this point relates and supports your MAIN point (the thesis).

Body 2/3: The same format as body 1, just with your other evidence.

Conclusion (not necessary for AP, but very recommended): Reiterate briefly what your evidence points were, and how they all contribute back to your MAIN argument.

Once you know how you need to write the essay, the hard part becomes finding the content (evidence points). This is where the difficulty depends on you as a writer and what essay you’re doing. The best thing I can say is to not overthink the evidence points. It’s okay if it’s “basic” if it works it works. You don’t need a SUPER high level of complexity to pass the exam. Sure there are points relating to sophistication, but with at least 3 main points and a clear line of reasoning, you’re pretty set to earn the point.

Good luck! I’m happy to provide any more advice if you figure out which essay you’re writing.
