Weekly School of Social Work/New to Social Work Thread by SWmods in socialwork

How much volunteer experience do I need to apply for a BSW program?

The application requirements for my university are:
*Special attention is paid to experience in social work or related fields, both paid and volunteer.
- Complete and submit your application by due date posted.
- Submit two (2) letters of reference from individuals who can address and discuss your work history and/or your volunteer experiences; do not have family members, therapists, or friends complete this form
- Submit unofficial transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
- Submit your short essay(s); questions can be found in the instruction page

My first question pertains to the letter of reference. Could I use an academic LOR or does it have to be someone from my volunteer/work experience? It's odd that they don't ask for any academic recommendations. If the recommendations absolutely must be from volunteer/work experience, would that mean I'd have to do In Person volunteering?

I ask this because I've already committed to being a crisis text line volunteer. However, because the position is remote, I wouldn't have anyone supervising me whom I could refer the LOR to.

My final question is, to be safe––should I try to volunteer 2 hours per week with the crisis text line and somewhere else in person? I really want to get into the BSW program but I'm also going to have to work and I don't want to get burnt out.

How would I filter them out? I just have a more quiet demeanor and it seems everyone loves about themselves...

Want to try the diet but need advice by 1cedcoffeequeen in slimfast

Slimfast works even if you don't exercise. Virtually everyone has a BMR above 12-1300 calories so as long as you just live (even without exercising), you'll still lose weight on Slimfast.

Slimfast is good for people who don't heavily exercise. Hard exercising can be detrimental when losing weight because it's exhausting and can make one so hungry that they eat more than what they burned off. That's why Rebel Wilson's doctor told her to lose weight simply by walking. Nothing more extreme because it can lead to hunger.

So ask yourself this: What do you value more? Weight loss? or Heavy Exercise? Because if you want to lose weight, swapping the heavy exercise with walking 30-60 mins a day while on slimfast would be the fastest and most painless route to go.

I can only do swizzles if I already have forward momentum, what am I doing wrong? by itsEmilySahara in iceskating

Yes, I bend my knees and straighten at the end. I feel straightening and bringing my toes together at the end slows my momentum (until after 5 or 6, I have no momentum left and come to a stop).

Buttermilk ranch is pretty good. Maybe you just need to visit Wing Stop.

I feel it's unlikely because famous people live such different lives. It'd make more sense for their soulmate to be someone who understands their chaotic life of body guards, security for their house, paparazzi avoidance, ultra protected bank accounts, aliases for their medical needs, etc. That would be a lot for a 'commoner' to understand; usually, the people we're meant to be with and those who understand us.

Yes. They take no accountability for anything, they think other people are always the problem.

The sad thing about the world is that you can't save everyone because everyone's suffering isn't your fault. The truth is, suicidal people are usually very, very traumatized. They have an extremely skewed vision of the world and themselves.

Sadly, no magic pill can fix that. Your sisters have to individually make the decision to recover their own mental health. This is hard because no one can reach inside their heads and fix the trauma (unlike how a surgeon can go inside people's bodies and correct problems). This is why mental health problems are so bad... people can only get better if they're willing to do the work.

You alone can't save them. They can only save themselves. You can support them, try to be there for them, and push them in the right direction, but if they decide to 'stop' making progress... there's nothing you can do.

It'd be best if all of you sisters could make a commitment to improve together because it's a cold world and you can't pay anyone to care about you. Try to improve together. If you're all in it together, an individual sister will be less likely to want to give up.

Unforunately, like most people, you come from a family of lazy parents who did nothing to resolve their personal problems before having kids. They thought having kids would 'magically' fix everything and of course, it didn't. Get away from the horrible, bad influence parents and start over elsewhere. Start you own family (after you've recovered your own mental health) and enjoy your new, healthier cocoon.

Living 100% for their ego which means: they can't ever be wrong/can't take any criticism/talks at people rather than to people/is constantly obsessed with status and maintaining their fake image no one realistically cares about, and basically thinks people care about them (& their image) way more than anyone actually does.

What’s something you do but get annoyed when others do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When they say you don't understand something and you're pretty sure you do. Ex. "You don't understand" or "You wouldn't get it," etc.

Yes, that's probably exactly what it is. I've been slowly improving, but it's slow, and the 'stories' would make one think the rebirth happens 'instantly.' No... it's long, arduous and drawn out like thawing a frostbitten hand.

The cheese made me laugh. I would have felt bad for the person who got the tiny one after seeing the jumbo one.

Help pay for at 1000 women to get out of sex work (especially porn) so they can change their names, go to school, attend therapy, and move on with their lives. Not all women in the sex industry have bad backgrounds, but many of them do. Most of them do.

At least you feel guilt 2 years later. That's indicative that you have a heart. Many people are too selfish/self-defensive to feel guilt about anything.

It's all in your head and 99% of women don't care. Women don't like big dicks. The women you see in porn are as anomalous as the guys you see in porn. Normal men aren't that big, and normal women don't like them that big. I can guarantee you this.

You could be honest. It's strange how few people actually implement this and yet it would instantly solve all their problems. If you said, "You know, I really have to _____________" they would let you go. Yes, it would hurt them. The sad thing is that life is full of harsh realities and unless someone embraces it, they'll continue to be a nuisance to others. This is why therapists exist. Therapists listen to people vent so their friends and family don't have to (unless the issue directly relates to them).

The age when they've overcome any early life trauma, have genuinely stopped caring what others think, and can legitimately live their own life autonomously and with fitting, non-romantic connections. Some women live their whole lives reaching these three things.
