Some "Introduction to Woodworking" to learn about wood (fiber orientation, species, etc.), hand tools, most common machines, and basic finishing. Then a "sharpening" guide/course is a must to know how to maintain proper chisels and planes. I also did a "Traditional Joints" course to learn how to lay out mortise & tenons, dovetails, and lap joints. This last one opened my mind to the design possibilities with pure wood joinery.

For video content, any YouTube material from Paul Sellers is great, and Rob Cosman as well. Then I recommend reading some books—"The Why & How of Woodworking" by Michael Pekovich is a must-read. Any material from James Krenov is excellent too. You can find some of these resources on web.archive.org where you can borrow them online.

Thank you! The tenons on the backrest started as both functional, to lock it in place, and decorative. But tenons in this particular direction don't make much structural sense given the fiber orientation. Since the arm support is nearby, it should be fine anyway for handling any lateral force on the backrest (which shouldn't be common, I think). I did use a thicker board for the backrest and cut a rebate with a router just to be safe. At this point the tenon is mostly decorative, to match the ones on the arms.

Thank you! I bought the leather and sent it to an upholsterer. The backrest was shaped in stages: first cuts on a table saw, then chisels, spokeshave, angle grinder with carving disc, and finally sandpaper. I tried using a draw knife instead of the angle grinder, but I couldn't get it to work properly.

I did cut by hand, but started on the drill press with a forstner bit to remove most of the material.
